The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! My family did visit the ByWard market and it was nice. The area is tight to walk and you have to be careful with cars. I was expecting a bigger and slightly cleaner place. I did buy some maple syrup for $10. Most of the restaurants looked small & tight so we did have lunch or dinner but if you're... More

I was somehow expecting a much bigger market, it's quite small but a few good places to eat if your hotel is close by its definitely the best!

We visited ByWard market three times during our stay in Ottawa at the end of August. We took many pictures of mouth watering fruits and vegetables, and enjoyed snacking on delicious berries and peaches. We visited a few of the many restaurants in the market place and especially enjoyed a lunch of Moroccan cuisine. I was happy to learn that... More

The colours, sounds, smells ... wow. Very neat to explore here. Went inside and outside around the market place. Finally tried a beaver tail. Wished we lived near here, so we could have taken advantage of all the fresh produce, as well as the crafts in the many vendor and farmer stalls.

Nice area to roam around; allow an 1-2 hours, some gems in the mix for shopping including La Botega and the Outdoor Vendors; skip the chain restaurants and try some of the local favorites; neat court yards look for cobblestone and follow your feet; check out horse drawn carriage rides there's a cool stable which is still operational; watch out... I absolutely LOVE walking around the market taking in all the sights and smells f fresh market produce! The vendors add that extra charm and pride in their wares by displaying them beautifully and artistically. As a former Ottawan, no trip "home" is without a walk through the market.

The Byward Market is more shops than a true marketplace but we always enjoy a visit there for restaurants, pubs, and my wife's favourite Hat Shop.

Brilliant place to shop and look for local foods and so on. Nice people, nice foods. Only thing is when the homeless are around, I feel bad and would love to help every single of them .. sigh
