The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all. « less

Our first stop this time - and every time - is the Ottawa School of Art on George Street. On display and for sale are works from students and former students. Sales go to support the operation of the school. We often find treasures which are now hanging at home. Second stop is La Bodega ni Castro, an Italian market... More

I visited as a teen and must have come on a weekend. We went during the week and it was not hopping as I had remembered it to be. Whiffs of garbage that you smell in big cities, lots of tourists, nothing too exciting but still glad to check it off the list.

ByWard is situated minutes from Parliament Hill and very close to the Rideau Shopping Centre. There are many places to shop and eat around here and best of all, it's never quiet. The amount of restaurants that are located here is overwhelming. I wanted to try a lot of them but ended up running out of time, and you may... More

The street performers were amazing. Acts similar to what you would see on stage for $$$. The choices of restaurants were overwhelming. Not enough time to try all of the ones we liked. Shopping was reasonable and a great selection!

A nice farmers market style in the centre of the city. Both outside and indoor merchants and sellers. Parking is an issue if you are an out of Towner and don't know the area well. Paid a dear price to park for the few hours I was there $20.00! Loved the atmosphere and the merchants are very accommodating and friendly.... More

Lots of restaurants, other than produce stands (which were terrific and spotless), most of the other shops were a tad touristy.

During the day, a bustling farmers market with open air cafes for coffee and a croissant, or a full breakfast; in the evening, a high energy, bright lights neighborhood full of friendly people of all ages out walking, checking out the restaurants, pubs and bars, entertainers. Something for everyone. Lots of fun just to walk around and see everything.

To be honest, this wasn't as good as I had expected. The market itself is good if you are living in Ottawa as there were some tasty looking food on offer but not much for the tourist. There are plenty of restaurants around this area so probably worth an evening visit for these.
