The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all. « less

Good to visit anytime during your visit to Ottawa. Lots of great shopping, things to see and places to visit for eats and treats. All the shop owners were friendly and welcoming. Clothes, food, kitchen and housewares in many different price ranges. Some arts and crafts stores as well.

the byward marketplace is an area filled with open air market produce and small shops with seafood, bakery goods and other foods. the flowers were beautiful and there is plenty of places to eat. if you are visiting from the states, remember there are restrictions on bringing fresh foods back from canada, but eat and enjoy while you are there.

Lots to take in, smell, hear and enjoy. You can buy everything from produce to soap here. We had lunch at a café here and really liked it and the people watching.

I expected the market to be larger and have more diverse offerings but that said there was enough variety to make a visit worth while. Fresh produce was abundant as was maple syrup.

Fun just to stroll around and even more fun to buy! Ate lunch at the best Italian place ever - the name began with a V :-) Finished off the afternoon with hand-made chocolates.

The market seems to have less variety as far as stall go that on my last visit. There are not as many local artisans as before. Lots of nice restaurants and food suppliers. The place to go for "Beaver Tails" treats.
