ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

One of my favourite stops while in Ottawa. There is so much to see in this area, too many great dining and shopping options for just one trip! A must see when visiting Ottawa for sure!

I live in the city and I remember back in the mid '90's I had to walk through the market at 5:30 in the morning on a Sunday and it felt like I was going back in time looking at the old buildings, no cars (and sound of) and the sun just starting to rise. It just felt old, beautiful... More

As a long time resident of Ottawa, I bring fewer guests to the market. Other than a few small blocks it is losing its charm. Too much traffic, not pedestrian friendly. Rideau street is horrible and ugly. That being said there are lots of restaurants in the market and some wonderful boutique stores.

Its still a little cold, but the people here can't be stopped by a little cold. The market is alive at night, and party are on. Girls running around in sub freezing temperature in mini skirts. This is where true Canadian Girls and Boys play. We hit up Soto, Ace Mercado, Blue Cactus, and ended our night at Asian Alley... More

The ByWard Market area is the best place to walk in the city. The atmosphere is great, there are a lot of nice cafes and restaurants. It clearly is the heart of the city. Don't waste your time walking Downtown.

Lots of variety for food lovers! Too cold out to get the full affect of walking around and enjoying the sights! Had a couple of nice meals and will definitely be back in the warmer weather!

Enjoyed the atmosphere & the selection of restaurants. Clean, close to hotels & other attractions. Some outdoor vendors selling sweaters, mitts, hats. Chocolate & candy stores but didn't stop into these. Bakeries, coffee shops. All outdoor entrances but lots of opportunities to visit & warm up. Easy walking access.
