#1 it is free :-) Downside they are only open Monday to Friday in July and August from 9am to 4pm. You need to call and reserve a tour time. We have gone to last two years and seen different things both times. They showed us a room with pics of the Titantic showing how much it has changed over... More

My children and I had a wonderful time at the Bedford institute of Oceanography. My children loved the salt water fish tanks and having the opportunity to hold and learn about marine animals. It is important that you make an appointment in advance as tours are kept to small number so that everyone can have hands on experience.

Great idea for the rainy/foggy day in the Halifax/Dartmouth area and its free admission! How many attractions can offer that deal? There was something for everyone in our group ranging from 15 to 78 yrs. old. Nicole, our tour guide was extremely informative and answered everyone's questions they had. Very educational regarding the province of Nova Scotia and her surrounding... More

My wife is very into animals and protecing the environment so I thought it might be interesting to stop in at the Bedford institue while we were in the Halifax area. I was quite impressed with the knowledgeable staff who can tell you all sorts of interesting information about animals and ocean geography and about the fishery industry. My wife... More

We booked a tour at the Oceanography center for a group of kids visiting Darthmouth / Halifax and they loved it....even I did too. The tour is free and the kids get to pick up lobsters and crabs at the end which they thought was just amazing. Well worth the visit if your looking for something to do.

I very much enjoyed the guided tour and the film documentary. It is very well done and worth the effort to get there. The touch tank for children (and adults) is great. Notable, though, is the fact that there is a lot of walking to the tour so if you aren't up for some walking and inclines, best to just... More

My son's Beaver group went, one of the leaders works for the BIO and the kids had a great time. Not sure if we got the same tour as everyone else but it was very neat. Our favorite part was the fish tank with all the jumping fish.

Anyone who wants to learn about the Oceans and the Science behind much of studies of the oceans might want to take a visit here. There are guided tours in the summer which are great for kids and there is something to learn for all ages.
