Fun trip

There was lots to look at and staff was friendly. They had a "search and find" for the younger kids which was nice.

This modest museum showcases much of what makes Nanaimo unique. There are examples of industry, history, entertainment, the harbour, mining, and Chinatown. There is recognition of the Indigenous people who lived in the region prior to settlement. The day we visited entrance fees were by donation with proceeds going to the local food bank. There was a nice gift shop... More

This is a top notch local history and archive. The information really covers the central island. There is an amazing link to the European explorers, exploiters and settlers and how they interacted with the local population.

I say the Nanaimo Museum has a beautiful gift shop because that is what we saw first and went into as we walked around town. Once inside we realized the door in the far corner gets you into their AMAZING museum. What a brilliant collection! The best $2 buck donation I ever spent in my life...Well Done Nanaimo. Cheers, Paul

I visited the Nanaimo Museum on 15 October 2015, Thursday. I really enjoyed the permanent history of the city of Nanaimo exhibits from ancient First Nations culture to the present-day construction of the Port Performance Centre. I especially liked the mock-up replica of the Nanaimo Coal Mine from the year 1900; the history of opera, dance, and music in Nanaimo... More

The young woman doing the walks needs to take two trips. One, to Protection. Island to see the point where hangings took place and two, a ghost walk with John Adams from Discover the Past tours in Victoria. Her obsession with bus noise and constant comments about buses could be helped with a portable microphone and amplifier (which tour guides... More

Taking my granddaughter out to the museum was a great activity - Nanaimo's museum staff have all kinds of hands-on learning activities for kids, including special events (like a wonderful Christmas elves' workshop, etc.!). But the museum is engrossing not only for kids, but for adults, too - we learned so much about this little city and the surrounding area,... More
