The Nanaimo Museum is a really active place with new exhibition every few months. And the variety of displays keeps it so interesting that you always find something that keeps you occupied for hours.

We really enjoyed this museum. Things were well organized and descriptions were informative but not so detailed as to be overwhelming. The coal mine exhibit was very interesting. Even though we know no one in Nanaimo, the videos of people talking about their memories of various aspects of the city were very interesting. One certainly got a lot of value... More

Just like the famous story - The Little Engine that Could - so, the Nanaimo Museum, though small in stature is grand in enjoyment. Having visited many museums, this one stands out for simple reasons. 1. It is spacious, which allows the visitor tremendous freedom and comfort. 2. Easy to read displays with fabulous creations of the history of Central... More

we've all gone to places where it just didn't feel right. This place is quite well located downtown. Maybe one of the things that sat wrong with me is it is in kind of a modern glass and metal building yet the very nature of a museum is to reflect older things and times. They seem to be quite well... More

Lots of great exhibits, well described and gives a good history of the area. Downtown Nanaimo is a wonderful place to wander around, so stopping in at the museum for an hour is a great idea.

Very nice and very informative little unlike-museum museum. Very nice exhibits. The coal mine exhibit was very well done. It really displayed the coal mine and made you actually like you were in one! And they also had a couple of Nanaimo bars to sit on :-) Cool! Very friendly personnel, informative displays and non-stuffy at all.

Hi Dodson, Thanks so much for giving us a great review! We really appreciate your support. My favourite part of your review was when said we were an "unmuseum-like museum" - it means a lot to us that people are comfortable and feel relaxed & welcomed, so thanks for the awesome compliment! Our feature exhibits change every three or four... More

This municipal museum was well thought out, clearly presented and informative. Of particular interest was the coal mine experience. They had created a mock up mine tunnel with exhibits inside. With the darkeness and eerie noises you felt like you were actually underground. We're still talking about it 3 weeks later.

Hi Lauretta, Thank you for taking the time to write a review of the Nanaimo Museum. The coal mine is one of my favourite exhibits as well. You're right, the sounds really do add just the right eerie touch! I'm glad your visit is still sparking conversation - what more could we ask for! Let us know what you think... More

We were just passing and saw the museum just off Commercial Street. We weren't going to go in but when I asked the price and was told $2 I thought why not. With low expectations we entered and what a surprise it was superb. Firstly it has excellent exhibits on Nanaimo life with a detailed explanation of the rather bizarre... More

Hi John, Thank you so much for taking the time to review the Nanaimo Museum - we appreciate your support! We are certainly glad you stopped by. We work hard to make sure admission can stay low so that the museum is as accessible as possible - looks like it's working! I love to hear people have "lost" themselves for... More

Interesting display about immigration to the area and the experiences that people had - both good and bad. I like their approach to this issue; gives people a real perspective on what it's like to be an immigrant.

Thank you for your review! Our summer feature exhibit was called Canada: Day 1 and it was travelling from the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 all the way from Halifax. We're glad you enjoyed it - we partnered with the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society to bring it here and it was great to see all the participation... More
