The Opal Hills trail has the steepest grade of any official trail in Jasper national park, but in return for a bit of effort, you get spectacular views of Maligne Lake from high above and the temptation of even higher peaks within easy reach. The distance isn't very far, so take your time. A few hundred metres straight up, and... More

the first 1.8km up hill is very steep. I was even thinking why did I do this? Also there was bear warning posted. But past the treeline and seeing Maligne lake down below, I felt very much rewarded. It's definitely worth it. Going around the 2 mounds and downhill was easy. I wish I had more time to climb one... More

This is a hike that I have done dozens of times... I hike it at least once, and often several times, each summer, and it's always amazing! I prefer to hike the loop in a clockwise direction (turning left at the junction), since the grade is more moderate that way. Also, I love the way the view opens up as... More

What a view, so worth it. You can see the mountain range beyond the lake. My wife took a boat ride while I did this hike. About 2.5-3 hours

Steep ascent for a couple miles then opens up to an alpine meadow. Not a lot of flowers at the end of August, but beautiful none the less. Take the last ascent to the far right after the hike seems to end to get incredible views of Maligne Lake. Go all to the end of the right most trail for... More

I'm a inexperienced hiker and the the hiking poles were very helpful for me on this trail - it is very steep at times (it is difficult trail on the park site). But I so liked it when we've got to the top - I couldn't get enough of the views of the valley. There is side trail to the... More

Some steep ascents - at least the route we picked. Well worth it for a visit to the alpine meadows with great views out over Maligne Lake and of the surrounding peaks. Lots of opportunities for scrambling up to the local peaks for those who want to get up higher.

Tough climb from the beginning. Good workout with rewarding views at the top. Loop provides different scenery for most of the way down. Quiet, only passed a couple people along the way.

The Opal Hills Loop is a quite strenuous hike - especially the first part of the hike. You start out with going up a steep tree-clad hill for about a mile. Once you get above the tree line the views a really good and especially the part of the tour that goes around the Opal Hills is beautiful. Unfortunately, that... More

The Opal Hills trail is a loop trail starting at the upper Eastern parking lot at Lake Maligne. The first 2,5km are a steep climb over an elevation of 400 meters. Lots of switchbacks. The forested hillside provides shelter against the heat. We saw quite a few Elk along the way, and because they are not scared there was plenty... More
