The Olympic oval was built for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Speedskaters from many countries train at the Oval as it has some of the fastest ice in the world. You too can skate on the Oval. There are skate rentals and regular public skating times. Pretend to be Clara Hughes or Denny Morrison as you glide around the... More

A few nights a week the Olympic Oval is open to the public for skating. At other times the Oval is used for training speed skaters. Check out their webpage for dates. It's an amazing and unique experience. Where on earth can you skate for less than $10 including skate rental on a 400 meter ice track. If you're not... More

The flowers were in full bloom and created such interesting and unusual displays with the pool and fountains. The baskets of tuberous begonias were breath-taking!

I had some time to kill at the University of Calgary earlier this week. Since it was a hot day, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the ice was still on the Olympic Oval. (A lot of arenas don’t keep ice on in the summer months.) I wasn’t planning on skating, so I took the stairs up to the... More

You may catch Olympic speed skaters from all over training here. You can also rent a pair of speed skates at certain times and go for a spin yourself.

It's worth a visit just to see the rink. We saw the World skaters taking a go at the fastest ice in the world and it was very exciting to say the least!

If you never skated on an oval before, it is a fun to try. They do have speed skate rentals. I wouldn't by a seasons pass but considering it was an Olympic venue you should check it out.

We went to watch a family friend compete in long track speed skating, I was a neat experience. Well maintained facility and their zamboni drivers were meticulous.

This is worth a walk-through even if all you do is gawk at the building. However, it's also a great place to skate -- lots of room! If you really want to understand what it's about, attend a speed-skating competition; these are surprisingly interesting and you are likely to see world-class athletes, including many locals.
