After years spent in rebuilding this short length of the Colne Valley Railway it is now to be torn up at the end of 2015 because a developer plans to build expensive executive houses in this rural environment within sight of one of the largest Norman castles in England. It is tragic in the extreme and a sad air of... More

I visited the railway for a steam day in June 2015. The Colne Valley Railway purports to preserve the heritage of the branch line railway that formerly ran along this route, however it offers only a very short trip and the rolling stock used - an industrial saddle tank locomotive and some run-down main line coaches - are not representative... We took our soon to be two year old grandson to the day out with Thomas the Tank Engine on Sunday 21st June. He met the fat controller, had rides on Thomas, Daisy and Mavis as well as the miniature railway. In fact he had a wonderful time. I was very impressed with the event, the location and the staff... Visited here for one of the Day Out with Thomas events. Found it to be good for children aged 2-6ish but adults and older children will certainly feel underwhelmed. We were aware in advance they have a short track length, but in spite of this we were still shocked quite how short it was. And as its a straight rather... More

Bit disappointed really. My 4 yr old boy loved riding on thomas but I feel as if with more effort it could have been better. The "imagination station" was certainly optimistically named as it had no imagination at all. Mega blocks & some colouring - that's it. No face painting set up. You'd think they'd have it on all day.... More

Made a visit as it may be closing after 2015 (which would be a great pity). Travelled by bus from Braintree station, which is fairly handy, if somewhat slow, but you get dropped at the end of quite a long approach track. On the way back I got a lift and we discovered some people who had been stranded when... More

My father in law was given a driver experience day for a present and so we all went along. He had a really enjoyable time and was very pleased with the day and the activities that he got to try. As spectators that had to be there for a certain length of time there was not much to amuse ourselves... More

Took a visit here in May half term for a mid-week teddy bear day (kids discount if they bring a teddy). There was a regular alternating steam and diesel rail car service, the model railways and the miniature railway operating. The cost for three was very reasonable in comparison to other nearby heritage railways. We had our youngest (4months) in... More

We visited Colne valley for a Peppa Pig Needless to say it was mainly for our granddaughter. Car parking was very easy and we headed into the station. There were a lot of people already lining up to see the lovely Peppa. I have qwto say the Peppa Pig although very friendly was of the giant stature variety and did... More

There is something unsatisfying about railways that don't actually go anywhere, and this is the biggest drawback to a visit here. There is a mile or so of track with a station in the middle, so the full round trip - out to one end, run round, right the way through to the other end, run round, back to the... More
