Visiting Derbent, where there has been a settlement for (according to the guide my group had) for over 5,000 years, gave me a new sense of perspective about history. Modern vehicles travel on roads that were once trade routes trod by camels and burros, and women and girls weave on looms not much changed since antiquity. more
