I guess that it all depends on where you stand - it makes a difference if you're a train buff, can adapt to small quarters, do or don't need four star accommodations, etc. We just returned from a Western Canadian trip that included a trip on The Canadian from Winnipeg to Vancouver - something that I've wanted to do for... more

The train was on time going out, the conductors were friendly and helpful, and the food car was acceptable. The seats are very comfortable, although I don't know what how it would be in the long haul (our trip was only 2 hours). Unfortunately (or fortunately), Canadian customs caught some smugglers on the return ride from NYC and our departure... more

If your thinking of taking The canadian don't bother. Took this trip from Jasper to Vancouver on the 20th Sept 08 and it was the only bad part of a great two weeks.. Train should of departed at 2.30pm actual time of depart 11.30 pm. we lost a whole day in Vancouver and no apology. Train could have done with... more

Went from Toronto to Jasper in late August, 2008. Overall, a worthwhile experience and a very good way to see Canada and appreciate its' size. I did the "Silver and Blue" Class (as opposed to the economy class), with a private single sleeper. The sleeper was cramped but adequate (I'm used to cabins on ships, so this was OK). Bunk... more

I've always wanted to cross Canada by train and the Canadian was the second stage of a holiday that had started with 4 days in Toronto. We arrived early to check in and the staff were friendly and helpful and took you through every stage from converting a voucher to ticket, ticket to cabin booking and our lunch and dinner... more

On July 15 my entire family (party of 8) boarded train #60, from Toronto to Montreal, scheduled to depart at 11:35 a.m.. After reading Via Rails website I was conviced that this was the best way to experience Canada. Upon boarding the fourth car of the train I accomodated my parents (77 and 75 years Old) along with my sister... more

I travelled on Via Rail's, "The Canadian" in the middle of June, 2008. I travelled Comfort class. This is very relaxing and an excellent way to see Canada, (or this part of Canada, anyway). The most spectacular part is the part from Edmonton and westwards, through the Rockies and British Columbia, but the rest is also interesting. The train is... more

What can I say that the subject title hasn't already touched on. Anyone believing that VIA Rail offers anything remotely close to what the golden age of rail was all about will be sorely disappointed. The passenger carriage I was on smelt like old gym socks and exhibited a patina of dirt and grime around the windows soiled/worn carpet and... more

I have used this service numerous time throughout my life and I must say it is terrible. It is a shame that this is pretty much the only rail service in available in Canada. The trains are almost never on time. I took a service from the Montreal airport to my hometown of Kingston Ont. and the train was delayed... more

So if you are not a senior travelling on the buy one, get one free pass, why are you even considering the train ? One word - don't. While the food has small portions, it was tasty, the service was sketchy at best, the stations poorly laid out and old, the timetable completely tossed out the window and the references... more
