This was a great experience. Tomás picked us up promptly in front of our house in San Miguel. We liked the horses, the canyon, the lunch and the fresh cheese we were able to bring home. The trail guides were extremely attentive; in fact, the ratio was one ranch rider to each guest. They changed my daughter's horse in mid-... More

My husband and I spent 8 days in San Miguel de Allende. Our vacation exceeded our expectations in every way. But, the highlight of our vacation was a half day of horseback riding at Rancho el Xotolar. We were picked up at our hotel by Tomas, one of the owners. He was very friendly and told us great stories about... More

A must do when in SMA or make it a reason to go to SMA. An experience you won't forget for rest of your life. We did our trip today and are ready to do it again. Tomas picked us up from our hotel 9 am. Then 40 mins drive later we reached the ranch, where you experience few cool... More

Don't hesitate to contact Tomos Ruiz for a visit to his family ranch, Rancho el "Xotolar". Tomas picked us up at 9:30 and drove us to La Canada de la Virgen archaeological site for a tour with his very knowledgeable guide, Arnold. That lasted until 12:30 and was very interesting and informative. Tomas picked us up there at 12:30 and... More

Incredible day spent first exploring the Pyramid with an arranged tour guide. Tomas arranged for us to be led by one of the archeologists who had been on the project. His knowledge of the site was extensive making the visit more enjoyable. We then proceeded to the ranch where we enjoyed an incredible home made lunch before heading out to... More

Today's ride was by far the highlight of our trip to San Miguel. As an avid equestrian I am always trying to find places to ride on vacation that 1) treats the horses well and 2) provides a unique experience beyond the usual "head-to-tail" trail ride. Rancho Xotolar was everything my husband & I could have hoped for, and more.... More

i agree with the common pleasures in past reviews and in their delight. i'd add that the ride to the little community, the very helpful break from the saddle half way thru, the offer to take photos, the flexible options for all riders... it is a well rounded half day. trying to milk a cow and the fresh precious cheese... We were connected with Thomas through Albert Coffee, who also does combination days with the Cañada de la Virgen tour and the horseback ride from the same location. We had planned to do both in the same day but I messed up our meeting location so we did them on separate days. As a result, we showed up for the... More

We didn't expect: (1) the horses to be so responsive, (2) the singing/yodeling guides to be so much fun, (3) to be cantering through rivers, (4) the delicious, homemade lunch sourced from ingredients grown at the ranch, (5) the fabulous photography and (6) to feel like honored guests at the home of the extended Ruiz clan.
