I attended the Instituto Allende as an MFA candidate many years ago on the advice of my graduate advisor at Univ. of Misissippi who had also graduated from there. He thought I'd do well because I was at a stage of development to do my own independant study. If you want basic art instruction, the Instituto is not for you.... more

This place is about as unprofessional as it gets.Indifferent if not outright appalling "teaching",clueless and indolent intructors, and a cast of cash cows who come to learn art and leave with less than they came with. The so-called travel help is non-existent, and the students learn more from each other than from the instructor( who rarely leaves her desk). If you... more

I arrived into San Miguel de Allende with the brightest and most postitive intentions of learinging more Spanish and starting work on my MFA. I was satified with the language program but the MFA program was horrid. The program was not much more equivilant to an elementry program for the arts in the states. The facilities were abhorrent, accest the... more

My Husband and I attended the Instituto for the month of April, 2006. We enrolled in the Semi-intensive Spanish Class, entry level, having no background in Spanish at all. Our experience could not have been better. Our teacher, Elvira was a seasoned, patient, literate woman who gave us a good basic course in the language. Her classes were interesting, well... more

I was a student at the Instituto Allende in March 2000, but not an art student. I was there for a month to study Spanish (6 hrs. per day). I thought the program & teachers were great. I learned more Spanish in on month, especially conversation than I did in 2 yrs. at my local community college & I felt... more

As a previous MFA student I can attest that everything negative about this place is 100% true. Beaurocratic nightmares, terrible instruction, alcoholic or know-nothing instructors. Everyone associated with the place (other than the students) seems to be completely apathetic about art or teaching. Bellas Artes is a much better school, but you may need to speak reasonable Spanish to attend.... more

Be sure to read the agreements made before signing up or giving over any cash or money because you will never get a refund UNDER ANY circumstances. Even the American Counseler office is powerless in desputes with the heads of this place. Don't expect help when in need from this place. Do expect to get the runaround of missed meetings more

Sorry, but this place is a tourist cash grab. Be very careful before signing up for a class. Instructors are either lazy, uninformed or hung over (and usually 30 minutes late). The school offers a very expensive MFA program - please talk to the currently enrolled students there before even thinking about signing up. They can give you horror stories... more
