The Instituto Allende is an icon in San Miguel, which has attracted many expats with artistic orientation to move there. You walk in its yards and see many people painting and you have to appreciate their artistry. On a side note, on what used to be Institute land, a very nice hotel, Rosewood San Miguel, open a short time back.... More

Though Luna Tapas Bar and the Mirador inch ahead a bit in terms of view, the Instituto is definitely in third place. The back terrace has a gorgeous view of the Parroquia, day and night, and with the jacarandas in bloom up the hillside only added to the scene. I love the galleries here, too, and the relaxing atmosphere. Even... More

The building is beautiful. It's divided into two parts. There are shops, restaurants, and display places in one building. The other building has various art, weaving, painting, and silver classes. The grounds are gorgeous and very inspiring for art students. Lots of plants and trees and, of course, cobblestones.

So much history of Old Mexico, this building must be 400 years old, can't help to visit every time I go to San Miguel.

Check out the student work and the galleries in this lovely historic building. Worth the side trip even if you are not into galleries.

I loved the 18th century period rooms completely furnished with descriptions of the culture, use and style including kitchen. Fine descriptions of the war of independence from Spain. Much art. Entire history of the Allende family.

One of our favorites! We loved the Artist Market that we just so happened upon. Met a couple of wonderful resident artist and gallery owners.

We visited during an arts and craft fair just after Christmas and found beautiful rugs, jewelry and metals birds...there is a "museum" quality store within that has beautiful jewelry, I bought 3 pairs of silver earings for myself and friends by an artist who's name I forgot to write down. The restaurant is supposed to be amazing but we never... More

I was disappointed that the small terrace bar open during my last visit, had closed. Views from the terrace at night are some of the best in town. During festivals local craftsmen display and sell their wares here.
