We lived in Merida for 2 1/2 months and the library was so important to us. At first it did not feel overly inviting, it depends upon who is volunteering at the front desk, but overtime the value of the library was indispensable to us as English speaking U.S. citizens. The library has a huge collection of books, fees for... More

The English Library is a helpful place to visit if you are new to Merida. The staff is helpful and willing to provide information to help you settle in the city. There are several computers with free internet if you are without access to the internet. The day I visited they had a meeting of the members with tea and... More

The volunteers are friendly and a great source of information about Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula. If you run out of books, you can become a member of MEL for a fee or purchase some of their used books. The library also organizes interesting events and activities for anyone. Non-members pay a bit more for these events.

We always stop in the read the apartment listing, even when we don't have plans to rent - we are helpless, we have to look.

I was in MEL this morning, about 30mins before closing. A Mexican man came in to enquire about membership for his whole family. The woman on the desk interrupted his question to snarl at him "Do you speak English?" "yes" he replied. "THEN SPEAK IT!" she shouted at him. I am appalled that someone thinks it is OK to speak... We immensely enjoyed the house tour which provides a peak behind the walls of the city's unassuming facades to many varieties of design. The meeting at the MEL provided a brief history of the city before the tour which gave a nice perspective.

Great place to meet people and to learn what is happening in town. Meet other expats and practice Spanish if you are learning the language. House tours begin here every Tuesday.

We took the Merida English Language library house tour--a Tuesday morning event. It featured 4 renovated houses. Two that were completed as single family dwellings, one renovated as a B&B, and a one in construction. The tour begins with coffee and cookies and a short introduction in the courtyard of the MELL. Some walking is involved but not really a... More

What's better than meeting new pals and getting some help from them as you give them some help back? Spanish and English conversation exchange at the library has been loads of fun and a great way to meet some new friends in Merida. It's a nice way to get different people together from different walks of life and get a... More
