I have been to Chichen Itza when you were still allowed to climb the pyramid. We had a fantastic time. This trip we went with family members that had never been to Cancun and this was our third trip. They wanted to see some Mayan Ruins and of course we didn't want to go where we had already been so... more

Everyone who visits the Yucatan Peninsula knows about Chichen Itza, but have you heard of Coba??? Coba is the last of the Mayan Pyramids on the Yucatan that you can still climb. It is such an amazing opportunity to climb the 12 story pyramid of Nohoch Mul that is 2000+ years old. The tallest Pyramid in the Yucatan. It is... more

Coba is best seen by renting a bicycle at the entrance. We initially laughed at the thought and wanted to walk through the ruins. When we walked about 1/2 a mile in 90 degree heat and still hadn't reached any ruins we opted to rent bikes. It changed the entire experience if only by allowing us a breeze on the... more

Becaus I'm a fan of less developed areas, Coba was my favorite of the 3 archeological sites we visited in the Yucatan - Chichen Itza and Tulum being the others. The only downside was that Coba doesn't open until 10 a.m. giving the touris buses plenty of time to arrive from Cancun and elsewhere so there isn't really a way... more

We really liked Coba ruins - at least you can climb up the temple and get a great view of the area. We probably should have rented a guide, but they wanted $20 for 2 people and we thought that was a rip off after paying for parking and an entry fee. I suppose we could have negotiated. But the... more

My family and I did a "Mayan Adventure" trip to Coba. This is a large site with one large temple and numerous smaller sites. You can climb the 120 steep, narrow steps to the top of the largest pyramid. It is not easy up or down. Our guide spent too much time stopping and talking at the smaller sites so we were hot and tired... more

We didn't get to Chichen Itza, but instead we opted for Coba as we were staying in Playa Del Carmen and it seemed closer. We took the Ado public bus from Playa Del Carmen, $7 each each way, and it took just over two hours what with drop offs at Xcaret and Tulum, but it was comfortable and convinient, and... more

One problem when you are on a vacation is that it does have to rain sometimes. We started out the day with a trip to a Mayan Village. I could have done without that. Dirty, barefoot children and huts with chickens, turkeys and other livestock was not my idea of a cultural exchange. On the bright side, I actually saw... more

Generally unexcavated Mayan ruins though quite a bit to see. We visited Tulum but much was lost on us not really knowing what we were seeing. We hired Dan, a guide at Coba - inexpensive and extremely worthwhile. You can choose the length of tour. Learning about the ancestral village and culture was so much more interesting. Climbing the pyramid... more
