I had hoped for a tour in Jan. 2015. Sadly, Alex Aranda has moved to Merida and is no longer offering tours in Chiapas. Perhaps the listing should be removed?

All this reviews have described Alex so well…. since I am a photographer I will just do it with images. The first one is during our tour to Tenejapa. Only Alex can make this wonderful but reserved people smile and make us feel welcome at the same time. I guarantee you that going alone will not be the same rich... More

Alex's explanation of the Chamula's religious practices and views was simply fascinating. The church is Chamula is unlike anything you have ever seen. Understanding what was going on was essential to understanding, and appreciating, that things we see as primitive have a logic and expression that may rival our more "sophisticated" religions. We stopped at a friend of Alex in... More

Our day spent with Alex, on Sunday market day to San Juan Chamula and two other villages, was the highlight of our two weeks in Mexico. As it happens there were baptisms going on that day in Chamula. One of the families invited him, (and us), to celebrate the occasion. The church activities were amazing...such an intact and vibrant culture!... More

We spent 5 hours with Alex yesterday (Monday) -- we visited one village where the women make pottery -- and we made several stops during the day in order to pick up special items of food. We have explored villages on our own which has been great -- but it is a completely different experience with Alex. His knowledge of... More

Alex is knowledgeable, although somewhat opinionated. But he readily admits that. I would not recommend trying to go to the Mayan communities around San Cristobal de las Casas without a guide, and Alex is an expert guide. He says he is tolerated, but a better word would be accepted. People everywhere greet him, and he is widely known. A visit... More

I've been in Mexico for 3 months, and this tour has been my favourite thing. Usually weary of the necessity of guides, Alex was worth every peso. His knowledge and relations with both pueblos create an incredible experience. You learn so much about every aspect of both towns: religion, geography, society, traditions and more. Both towns are seemingly plain and... More

The most wonderful day! Alex is a wonderful and passionate guide who had very extensive knowledge of the people and the region. Just a beautiful experience. Very easy to organise too. Thank you!

Typically I'm not a "tours" type of person, preferring to do things on my own. However, based on my previous understanding of the Chiapas highlands (this was my second trip to the area) and Alex's outstanding reviews, I really felt that making plans with him would be the best way to visit a few of the towns surrounding San Cristobal.... I made arrangements for two private day trips through Cielo y Tierra Tours based on other Trip Advisor reviews and I could not be happier about my decision. I was thrilled that I was able to add a third tour after I was in San Cristobal. I had visited Chiapas previously, but I wanted to use a guide this time... More
