We went to a movie here. The theatre has beautiful old plaster decorations but comfortable modern seats.
The exterior architecture gives a hint at the grandeur you will experience once you pass through the main door way. Both the outside and the interior are lavishly done and well maintained. I got a private tour by asking one of the workers who was repairing a bit of work near the front doors. He walked me through the theater... More
In a most lovely Theatre. Attended The Saint Petersburg, Russia ballet companies performance of Swan Lake. The Teatro is lovely place with gold trimmed walls, seating perhaps 600 or so. The acostics are excellent. We had third row aisle seats for 500 pesos (about $38 US) about what the rear balcony at San Francisco would cost us. Having seen about... More
If there is a performance at this early 20th Century theater, don't miss it. It exhibits European influence on the culture & arts of Mexico & is just a fun venue for all sorts of wonderful programs, many of them free.
If you are lucky enough to be vacationing in Oaxaca, when there is a special event going on at the Teatro Macedonia Alcala, you will be very lucky indeed. I and two friends went to see a Russian ballet at the theater in October. The show was fabulous. The theater is old and wonderful and beautiful with a huge center... More
We see the HD Met Opera at home in a movie theater, but in Oaxaca it is shown in the beautiful European-style opera house, one of the many treasures of this fabulous Mexican city of music, dance, art and culture! We also saw a fully staged production of "El Murciélago" (Die Fledermaus! [The Bat!]) recently - a beautiful production with... More
I was walking by the theater and stopped to chat with the gentleman in the ticket office to ask him a little about the history of this building. He explained that it was built in the French Style because the then President/Dictator of México (Porfirio Díaz), was from Oaxaca, and a diehard Francophile. Built around 1903, this is the first... If you go just to see the building, I give it 5 stars! You get transported back in time, so neat. However when we went for a Lila Downs concert, it was way too hot with a full house inside the theater. My companions said it was not always that bad, but that day it was very uncomfortable. If you... More
This theater has magic like Oaxaca city. Just one block from the main square Zocalo. From the outside it just looks like a nice building. But please try going inside, there are daily opening visits, but also what I would recommend would be a visit in a cultural event, this is: theater plays, concerts, and a lot of movie projections... The elegant period architecture of the theatre truly contributes to Oaxaca's history in art. Definitely we recommend taking a complete tour of the building.
