Tamayo performed a great public service in assembling this collection, but it cries out for a little curating. Somewhat akin to Dr Barnes in Philadelphia, Tamayo had his own views about how these pieces of pre-Columbian art should be viewed and related to each other -- basically they are grouped across the entire Mexican isthmus in periods of time. His... More

This is a lovely collection of artwork from around Mexico. What I really enjoyed about the museum was that it is truly an art museum as opposed to an anthropology museum, meaning that there is no information about the cultures that the art comes from or what role these images played in the society. Visitors are encouraged to admire the... More

Tamayo collected these antiquities for their beauty, with no interest in their source or archeological context, and they are shown as art objects. Some them seem sadly torn from their homes, but they are displayed beautifully and some are splendid. We were struck by the little clay sculpture of a ball game, the engraved human jawbone and the multiple Colima... More

This museum has precolumbian artifacts beautifully displayed. Tomayo was an artist and designed all the desplays. It is an outstanding collection.

An amazing collection of cultural elements in the art, faces, and skills of these precolumbian masters. Bring a camera...no flash.

It's hard to believe anyone could have such a huge collection of pre-Columbian art. Really interesting and different as is the setting.

Probably my favorite museum in Oaxaca and clearly the work of an artist in how it is organized and the objects displayed. So pleasing to the eye and reflective of Tamayo's artistic talents. Wonderful exhibitsin lovely historic 18th century building. Love those laughing women!

There are well displayed pieces of very early art collected by Tamayo over his lifetime. Explanations are minimal but there are cards in each room that translate the Spanish.
