Oscar does an excellent class worth the 65 USD price tag. You begin by deciding as a group what you'd like to cook, then head to the market to get any ingredients that aren't already fresh in the kitchen. Oscar provides an educational market tour where you learn about the different types of chiles, herbs and produce. The class has... More

As an avid home cook, I was anxious to take this class, and I was not disappointed. Our class had 11 students. We started by picking the menu while enjoying bread, jam, coffee, and tea. While I thought it was interesting to have a say in the menu, it's hard to accomplish that with so many students... Particularly when everyone... More

I was delighted. The day was informative. Oscar really knows his chosen profession. Learning little tricks like adding the cumin or the grasshoppers to the salsa was enlightening and you could really taste the difference between them. So I loved that there was this great base recipe and then it would change. Marvelous. All chefs need to add their own... More

My partner and I were very excited to do a cooking course in Oaxaca. However, when we first arrived it felt like we were in the wrong place. A cook from the kitchen could find no record of our booking despite us receiving a confirmation email the day before. He sat us down, we wondered whether the course would happen... More

Oscar started the day by asking what we wanted to make, this is especially important for those with food allergies/intolerances like myself. We planned the menu and went to the market to get all the ingredients. Oscar was flexible in adding dishes and courses all along when we saw ingredients that were interesting or wanted to know more about. Being... More

I have taken cooking classes in several other countries. I really learned a lot about Oaxacan cuisine from Oscar. Our group was 14 and we all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience -- from the democratic decision-making on what to prepare, our trip to the lovely neighborhood market to the hands-on preparation of the salsas, appetizers, mole, dessert and drink.... Did the cooking class as part of a group within our tour. Oscar sat down with us (group 8) at 9am and asked us what we would like to cook and learn for the day over coffee. We the. Walked to the local village market where we purchased our ingredients and Oscar spent time explaining the different foods, ingredients and... More

It turned out that there were only the 3 of us for class on our day; my daughter and myself and a very nice Guatemalan woman who had been living in the US for many years, but I felt Oscar gave us the full on experience. It's like having a cooking class in the home of a very cool friend... More

Oscar, the owner/chef, came across very uninterested. He shared very little information and didn't ask me any questions and was generally unfriendly. He was also rude and dismissive of his staff in front of me. I was the only student so did get to choose the menu, but it actually turned out to be one of the least tasty meals... More
