Too much local vendors and huge waves

Not the best choice for us, we prefer much more natural and quiet beaches withou commerce. So I would recommend Diamond beach - reachable by bus in about 20 min from Centro.

Go to La Union on Playa Hornos and meet Cerillo. You have to just love the guy. Except for some gray hair (but who has not gotten those) he has not changed in 30 plus years. Great Papas Fritas and cold beer and good ceviche and of course Pazolle on Thursday.

The area from the flag to Commercial is a good place. Soriana (very modern) and Aurrera (walmarts value brand) are right across the road for food and beer. The water is pretty calm with the sheltering rocks. I've seen tourists take their hammocks and string them between palm trees for the day. Very easy to do.
