The marketplace was something to do at night where you could go and get a good drink and maybe some decent food, but during the day nothing seemed to be going on. The straw market was average. Some of the vendors were willing to bargin with you but very few. My husband and I should have changed our names to... more

We walked all through this straw market on our way to and from the beach during our day trip to Freeport. Although the straw market here is prettier than the one in Nassau, the vendors here are quite unwilling to bargain, and their prices for items are at least twice as high for what you would pay in the US... more

The Port Lucaya Marketplace(overrated) aka "The Straw Market" by some, is a major attraction on the island and it runs along the water. There is walkway along the length of the entire marketplace that pretty much starts by the main pool of our hotel. This made things very convenient if you liked to stock things like beverages or needed pharmacy... more

If planning to visit Grand Bahamas island, stay near Port Lucaya. All restaurants, shops, casino and supermarket are nearby. Also most boat activities leave from this marina. I stayed at the Woodbourne Resort which is 20 minute walk from the International Bazaar and a taxi ride from hotel to Port was $15 one way. more

Port Lucaya is mostly a shopping area for tourists with many cute shops, but make no mistake, it IS a tourist area designed to part you with your money. Be sure to have cash, as many stores do not take credit cards. Or, they will offer a much better price for cash vs. credit! One store even refused to sell... more

We stayed at Taino Beach (ritz) resort about 5 minutes away from port Lucaya. The food at the resort was nothing special and I must say that the customer service was BELOW average and we had a lot of things cancelled and closed down that we canted to do that week. There were about 12 couples there at the same... more

The market provides alternate dining from the resorts across the street, which will save you a pretty penny, and amenities like a drug store and liquor store are pretty handy. While the shopping isn't GREAT, its pretty good and more then what you will find at the international market. DON'T bother with the international market as its still not up... more

It is really the hub of entertainment in Lucaya and you may be disappointed. Here's some tips that may hopefully help you find your way... 1) Oasis is your typical drug store/quicky mart type place. Go here for toothpaste, suntan lotion, bottled water, candy, snacks, etc. etc. It's expensive but no where else sells this stuff that we could find.... more

This is a nice place to wander around the shops and the straw market- a good place to pick up souvenirs. This is not power duty-free shopping like St. Thomas, but they have a nice selection of jewelry stores and t-shirt places. There are plenty of bars and eateries to pick up a bite or spend the afternoon people-watching and... more

When you get over the initial greeting of all the ladies working the market place stalls, the market place is a fun day or night out. Check out Wednesday and Friday nights in the Count Basie Theatre located right in the center of the market place. Fantastic new show and great local bands play. The limbo performer is absolutely amazing!!!... more
