Built sometime before 1796 and continued to function as a market place where African Slaves and various commodities were sold until the late 1800's. I read wonderful things and was anxious to visit the Pompey Museum on our March 2006 trip to Nassau. When I arrived at the building, the front door was locked, the windows were covered (soaped), and the gate alongside the house (leading to a stairway to the second floor) was also locked. Nassau is full of buildings with history, but the government has appropriately chosen the historic Vendue House to tell the social history of the Bahamas - the Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation.
