very crowded, but great place to buy silk by the yard! I wish I could have found some thing to eat besides fried chicken!

Independence Square is definitely in the heart of the city. On independence square and within the block, you can find our six major banks, shopping areas, restaurants, nuts vendors, shoe stores, newspaper vendors, sweet vendors, water vendors, telephone providers, government offices, the Treasury and Central Bank. Independence Square is the home of the Promenade and fast food outlets. You can... More

A bustling hub of commercial activity not designed for tourists on an architectural tour of European designed / made treasures, preserved in the tropical heat. The roads are narrow, parking limited to a few blocks away, sidewalk vendors & store Dj's competing music filling the air, taxi's honking at you for a fare, reminds the experienced traveler of other Indo-Asian... In the day, there are lots of people shopping, eating, and hanging out.. if you enjoy crows this is the place for you!! Surrounded by many stores and restaurants, KFC seems to be the hot spots. Everyone said to avoid this area, especially at night, however this white guy (me :-) didn't have a problem when I wandered away at... More

By all means drive or take a taxi to see Port of Spain but outwith your hotel walking the street is best avoided. It used to be a safe city but alas, is longer so.

This is not an area that should be a tourist attraction. It is a historic and important landmark, yes, BUT it is also a bustling hub for public transportation and some unsavory characters. Nearly every mugging of a tourist I have heard of happen in Independence Square. If you do choose to go here, please make smart decisions and leave... More

Port of Spain downtown (inner city) shopping area. Visit in daylight only. Not for the naïve visitor. A rather sketchy area. Be sure you have smaller denominations of TTDs to pay for any purchases (skip using your credit card or other currency). Bakery had tasty baked goods, albeit there are vertical bars from the counter tops to the ceiling to... More
