By all means drive or take a taxi to see Port of Spain but outwith your hotel walking the street is best avoided. It used to be a safe city but alas, is longer so.

This is not an area that should be a tourist attraction. It is a historic and important landmark, yes, BUT it is also a bustling hub for public transportation and some unsavory characters. Nearly every mugging of a tourist I have heard of happen in Independence Square. If you do choose to go here, please make smart decisions and leave... More

Port of Spain downtown (inner city) shopping area. Visit in daylight only. Not for the naïve visitor. A rather sketchy area. Be sure you have smaller denominations of TTDs to pay for any purchases (skip using your credit card or other currency). Bakery had tasty baked goods, albeit there are vertical bars from the counter tops to the ceiling to... More

I agree with most people that it is not really a highlight to visit, but me and my friends spend quiet some time sitting at a bench watching the local people and actually really enjoyed our time! We had great BBQ lamb and chicken and listened to the street music. Although it was night, no one was bothering us. We... More

If you decide to go in to Port of Spain for a shopping experience then definitely walk through Independence Square. On one side are financial buildings and on the other are the small shops and stores. We went up Federick Street. Up one side and down the other. We had lunch at a food court in the upper level of... You could visit a really nice cathedral (Trinity). Lot of people wondering around, you could buy fruits, there are a lot of vendors. It is a place like any downtown in my country: people people people
