Before moving to Martinique two and half years ago, I heard about le Jardin de Balata from my mother in-law that it's one of the must do whenever one is in Martinique. The weather in Martinique for the past 2 years have been unusually hot, so I didn't think about visiting the garden. However, since last November, constant rain and... More

On a cruise-stop in Martinique, we took the city bus up to Balata Gardens. What a beautiful trip! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! We walked from the cruise port to downtown Fort-De-France... about 20 minutes where we caught a bus. The bus is a modern, city bus unseen in the Caribbean and in 12/2011 the price was 1.30 euros/person/trip. The bus... More

I liked it quite a lot even if I saw much better and the price is too high. 12,5 Euro and you can hardly stay more than 1,5 hours - it's not very big. More

We took a shore excursion to Balata Gardens offered from our cruise stop in Martinique. It was about a 45 minute bus ride from the port in traffic but very nice once we arrived. There are trees and plants from all over the world. Nice layout and a comfortable walk. A portion of the walk takes you on elevated suspended... More

Very well planned garden with well marked trees and species. we loved the hummingbirds near the main office. The canopy tour provided an interesting view. Great place for photography More

I visited the gardens in the end of August. The weather was perfect and I could cherish the tropical lushness of the extensive interior the gardens offer. The views were jaw-dropping, and the skywalk 10 metres above the ground was a definite highlight. I spent there more than three hours, took tons of photos but it's my memories that are... More

My trip to Martinique was brief. The most memorable site is the Balata garden which is situated in the northeast, on rout to Mt. Peele. It contains numerous exotic tropical plants and flowers. Huge hummingbirds are visitors' frequent companions. Even though I did not have time to explore the rest of the island, I did bring back with me a... More

Even if you aren't horticulturally inclined, you owe it to yourself to take a stroll amongst the lush greenery in the Balata Gardens. I'm not a big plant person, but I've thought time and again of the few peaceful hours that I spent walking around the gardens; the abundance and variety of plant life is both fascinating and beautiful, and... The gardens were originally a part of a private estate. If you love to see plants identified this is the place to be. It's also an interesting drive up into the mountains from Fort de France. More
