Description: More than just an art museum, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico hosts concerts...
More than just an art museum, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico hosts concerts and festivals as well. The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR), a non-for-profit organization, was inaugurated on July 1, 2000, as a legacy for the Puerto Rican people. The mission of the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is to enrich the lives of its diverse audiences by making accessible and promoting the knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of visual arts from Puerto Rico and the world. The MAPR engages diverse communities to facilitate learning experiences about the visual arts through: the growth of a well-researched permanent collection exemplifying significant and representative examples of Puerto Rican art from the sixteenth century to the present; a dynamic program of exhibitions supported by engaging and exciting educational and cultural programs that collectively deepen the understanding of the role of the visual arts in the human experience and contribute to the creation of a curatorial legacy; documentation, research, interpretation, preservation, and conservation of the collection and the visual arts patrimony of Puerto Rico; and alliances with local, regional, and international museums and institutions to advance the knowledge of, access to, and understanding of the visual arts of the world.

The current, brilliantly curated show arranges the collection by themes rather than by chronology or artist. The arrangement allows one to appreciate a variety of artists in each room. The museum itself, formerly a hospital, is a prime example of creative reuse and preservation. The botanical gardens enhance the experience. The staff is friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

10min outside from touristic Old San Juan, this museum changed my perception of pr. High level art works were political, religious, and emotional. Extremely powerful expressions.

Assessing art museums is very subjective but I enjoyed my visit. As stated by other reviewers, this had a very eclectic collection of contemporary art. It was a very nice building and the grounds in back were worth a quick stroll. I also noticed there was a kids area to "explore" on the lower level. I also really wanted to... More

We liked the old military aspect of the building itself which is said to be an old barracks. The exhibits on display are great and we would definitely return. Great for family with or without children and very accessible for wheelchairs and baby strollers.

I liked the fact that the guides were able to talk about all sorts of subjects including art and politics. Museum store had great postcards. Wonderful children's interactive display. People were a delight.

Lovely gallery and gardens featuring over-sized contemporary art. It was nice to see the amount of programing for children.

This is a wonderful museum! There weren't a ton of people there (which was really nice), but that means I need to get the word out about how amazing this place is. The artwork is all fairly contemporary (approx last 100 years). The current exhibition is a thematic interpretation of their permanent collection, which was very well done. The sculpture... More

As far as beach/resort destinations are concerned, this art museum was a great dry-dock add-on to our 'mostly-wet' vacation. I was enthralled by the sheer number of over-sized works the galleries held, and very pleased to learn about PR through its vibrant colors, daring themes, videoart, and portrait work. It was/is a successful amalgamation of religious, cultural, and ethnic themes,... More

Took my girls (7 &10) and we all had a great time looking around. We made the mistake of coming on Monday the first time (they are closed Monday's) but we came back the next day and spent most the day here. The garden in the back was so beautiful, don't miss it.

We spent two full hours here. There is a contemporary art museum in this area, as well, but there is plenty (mostly, actually) for the modern art lover here! The staff went out of their ways to share with us what they knew about the art. The art gave us amazing insight into the Puerto Rican psyche: they were themes... More
