Reading previous reviews made me want to visit this place. It was great! A total dive! But the bartender was very cool and you felt right at home sitting in here. A must stop if you are in Old San Juan. Just down from NoNos , so you can hit them both!

It's nice to have a place that isn't geared towards tourist in San Juan. Drinks are cheap and all sorts are there till the wee hours

I am now 61 years old, but when I return to El Batey in Old San Juan I travel back in time to my college days, and nothing has changed. Several generations of 20th century SanJuaneros will attest to what I am writing. The "Rum Diaries" were born here. This place is to Hunter Thompson and Puerto Rico what "la... More

El Batey was recommended by a friend of a friend but I'm not sure I agree. The drink was stiff and the owner was tending bar. Kind of dirty but not in a good way....smoking in the bar. Yuck.

Though I did not spend near enough time there, this has to be one of the finest drinking bars in the world. Absolutely no frills. Lots of well-priced liquor. Good and quirky bartender, and the kind of character other bars can only dream of. If you have been to the Chart Room in New Orleans, you know exactly what I... More

Are you looking for food? Tasty mixed drinks? Cleanliness? Service? Don't go here. Are you looking for a unique dive bar experience that's cool as hell? One that makes you feel like you're on a movie set with a great selection of tunes? Go here!

This is probably one of the oldest bars in the Old San Juan area, or at least that is how it looks. As someone who enjoys dive bars this one is top ranking! Cold beer, strong drinks, cramped pool table area and hours of operation that vary by whom may on staff at any given time. They have their own... More

The four of us stopped in on a whim for a quick shot of Fireball. The barmaid was cute and fairly friendly- the highlight of the day was when her tough demeanor dropped off and her face lit up and she flashed a huge smile when we left her a very generous tip. We were the only people there, I... More

This place defines don't judge a book by it's cover. From the outside this place may look off putting to some but the drinks are cheap and the bartender does not skimp on the alcohol. This was one of my favorite places I visited when I was in Old San Juan. Very chill atmosphere and the bar decor is really... More

El Batey is exactly what my husband and I were looking for. Good drinks, good prices, no fuss. We don't want the typical touristy spot- we like to go where the locals go and El Batey is the place. We can't wait to go back!!
