This place is definitely a place everyone should stop in for a quick beer. It has a fun, divey atmosphere and the bar tenders ensure you get that "you're welcome, but your not welcome" vibe. There's a juke box which hasn't been updated for a decade. There's graffiti all over the walls. The lighting is dim at best. All of... More

There's no better place in Old San Juan to have a cold beer (or two!) after exploring the city. El Batey is a classic dive bar - no attitude from the staff, very humble surroundings, cheap drinks, interesting characters and even the opportunity to scrawl your name on the wall.

This is the type of place that you wander into thinking you'll just have one and you end up staying for a few hours. The Medalla is ice cold and dirt cheap, the vibe is super laid back, and the bartender (Phillipe) seemed very cool. And the jukebox is fantastic. Seriously, you want to mentally note what is on there... More

I went here on a solo trip looking for some friendly people to hang out with. Well, mission accomplished. Philipe the bar tender/administrator is old school good hearted friendly and just super cool.

El Batey isn't the kind of place you'd order a pina colada. Get a Medalla or a Barrilito on the rocks and enjoy the divey ambiance and friendly patrons. Write your name on the wall with a sharpie. Lose hours of your life, and love it. This is my favorite stop every time we're in OSJ!

We spent one of our nights in Old San Juan walking around and bar hopping. El Batey was somewhere I had heard about and definetely wanted to visit while in Old San Juan. We got there about midnight and I asked the bartender what time they closed. He said "700" I said " AM!?!?" With that said, we were there... More

We were in Old Town for the day and decided it was time to rest our feet and grab a beer. We were going to have dinner at Marmalade but they weren't open yet so I checked my trusted trip advisor ap and we found this little bar. Its very basic there was one bartender who was a true island... More

El funno pretty much sums it up. Total dive! Cheapest place to drink in old San Juan. We had drinks across the street at El Convento Hotel and one round was the same price as 2 hours of drinking for 5 people at this place. Surly woman bartender who was trying hard to be tough but she enjoyed our humor.... More

To say this place is gross is an understatement. It is the nastiest bar I've ever been in and it was AWESOME!! Extremely relaxed and comfortable and very cheap prices. This is one of those places that you just have to experience....there isn't anything else like it in San Juan!
