It's definitely a hole, but an awesome hole! The story as I was told: the owner was frustrated with people drawing graffiti on the walls.. One day he just started handing people sharpies.. I guess if they where going to scribble it would be with his consent..And the most unique dive bar in San Juan was born.. Drinks where good... More

It's a local bar, juke box, quaint atmosphere. If you are looking for something relaxed, different, huke box with great selection of music, you should visit there. The staff is a little bit impolite but once you get there friendship, you turn friends for life. The beer wasn't proper cold, but it wasn't a problem. There also has a pool... More

Absolute "must do" if you are a connoisseur of the dive bar. We absolutely loved it. We spent a couple hours on a Sunday afternoon talking with Rafael the Manager/Bartender about everything from the history of the place to Puerto Rico politics. The walls are covered with thousands and thousands of signatures of the patrons who have frequented the place.

One of the best stops in OSJ. Dont expect much, this is a dive bar. Very down to earth patrons and the best bartender ever. Looking forward to returning this December

Reading previous reviews made me want to visit this place. It was great! A total dive! But the bartender was very cool and you felt right at home sitting in here. A must stop if you are in Old San Juan. Just down from NoNos , so you can hit them both!

It's nice to have a place that isn't geared towards tourist in San Juan. Drinks are cheap and all sorts are there till the wee hours

I am now 61 years old, but when I return to El Batey in Old San Juan I travel back in time to my college days, and nothing has changed. Several generations of 20th century SanJuaneros will attest to what I am writing. The "Rum Diaries" were born here. This place is to Hunter Thompson and Puerto Rico what "la... More

El Batey was recommended by a friend of a friend but I'm not sure I agree. The drink was stiff and the owner was tending bar. Kind of dirty but not in a good way....smoking in the bar. Yuck.

Though I did not spend near enough time there, this has to be one of the finest drinking bars in the world. Absolutely no frills. Lots of well-priced liquor. Good and quirky bartender, and the kind of character other bars can only dream of. If you have been to the Chart Room in New Orleans, you know exactly what I... More
