I was traveling by myself but la placita was a safe, very fun area. I didn't make it to the market during the day, but it was great at night. Less than $2 for a beer and you can hop from bar to bar.

The farmer's market is fun to check out during the day, but the plaza really comes to life at night. I went on a Friday night, but assume most nights are like this: the streets are blocked off to traffic and the entire 2-3 block radius around the plaza turns into a giant block party. The bars open their doors... More

Besides the parking problem, visiting LA PLACITA is always fun.You have so many options,All kinds of food restaurants and bars to your like. This time of the year is the best because the temperature is cool. When you visit, head to COCO DE LUIS for your first drink and take it from there to where you want to continue,a restaurant or another Bar!

For a wonderful non tourist experience, head to this market area in Old San Juan. Lots of locals selling their wares, and for sure the smell of fresh fish. Fun lively area at night too when the city residents come too hang out and enjoy.

Great place to hang out. People get dressed up at night and come down to party. Cheap drinks. Pina colada, a water and soda for about $5. Coming from a resort this was a STEAL. Lots of interesting things in the market. I had the best alcapurias i have ever had at a little place around the corner from the... More

This isn't a place that is recommended by the hotel. There are all natives in this area, no tourists, and the place is awesome. We met two people who spoke English. The people who didn't speak English, were just as nice as well. A stall owner pulled us behind his counter, peeled and cut an orange for us to taste.... More

This is an square adjoining a historic city market that still houses a produce market within. Ringing the market are numerous small bars and restaurants, most frequented by locals. On Friday evenings, crowds congregate to live music. It's located in the Condado neighborhood, south of the interstate, and is a welcome respite from the tourist scene. Not far from the... More

While in San Juan you should definitely visit Viejo San Juan for the local experience, good restaurants and shopping, but for the real local nightlife you have to go to Plaza del Mercado. This is about a 4 square block area of local restaurants and bars serving every kind of cocktail you can think of, local Puerto Rican food, comida... More

(My original review wound up under plaza las americas. Sorry about that. ) This place has a lot of reasonably priced goods and local foods. Dislike: the ac was either broken or they didn't have one; which made smells from the fresh fish and butcher places a bit over whelming.
