A must if staying in Samana! We flew into Puerto Plata, but the 4 hour drive to stay in Samana was worth it alone to see the amazing Humpback Whales in their natural habitat! I couldn't believe how long we had taking photos of them. Didn't see any breaching or tails, but next time hopefully!

Our holiday coincided with a period of fairly strong winds, so the water was choppy/rough. This sometimes limited the speed the boat could reach but we get sightings of 7 or 8 humpbacks - although these were restricted because of the height of the waves. Not as good as the sightings we've had in quieter waters in Alaska but we're... More

We were on our way back from the National Park when our captain spotted whales in Samana bay. We idled for a while until they resurfaced and we saw two humpback whales. It was my first time seeing a whale and I was surprised at how quiet such a large creature could be. So majestic and beautiful, it was a... More

We joined Kim Beddall's excursion and really enjoyed the trip. She provides a commentary in English, French, German, and Spanish. LOTS of information. She also guarantees that if you don't see a whale on your trip you go again at no cotst.

We booked with a local tour company. Do this if you have not seen whales before. We are here still during whale season and saw several. A couple of families, some tail slapping, and some young ones breaching. Tough to take pictures as the action is fast. Prepare yourself for seasick ness.

Yes if you visit between January and March you are almost certain to see Humpback Whales. Unfortunately it is a short season so the boats are jam-packed full of tourists and actually getting more than a glimpse of the whales (let alone trying to photograph them) can mean a lot of pushing and shoving. Pick your tour company with care.

there are numerous trips from different places to go and see the hump back whales, we chose one from the beach for $65 per person. A four hour trip being picked up from a jetty near our hotel, we travelled out and saw a few whales in the distance and immediately started taking photos. After a short while it became... More

Was a site to see. A momma, poppa and baby humpback whale within a few minutes of our boat ride. They are an amazing creature. Nice to see them in their natural habitat (where they should be) instead of an aquarium.
