This Cathedral was built (the oldest part) in the early 1500's and then additional chapels were added later. We were not with a tour but for the $3 admission received headsets that guided us around the building in English. This cathedral was like a slice of Europe in the Caribbean. It is very tall and well kept. We did not go inside because when we were there they were having some type of military ceremony - idk. It was cool to watch from the outside though.
I took lots of pictures of it. The architecture of the cathedral, the doorways and windows were asolutely beautiful. Live flowers graced the windows.
One never knows what to expect when visiting. The Archdiocese of Santo Domingo nor the Cathedral have a website, so one cannot plan a visit without calling - and that's if someone is willing to answer the phone there. Went once and they wanted to charge me to enter, but later learned that it was because of an exhibit. But...

Historical site, first church, take a tour, negotiate price with local guide and spend 2-3 hours touring the oild town historical sites.
This has it all...stained glass windows so beautiful they drip colors...artwork so old it belongs in museums...these are probably reworks but really beautiful ones...just gorgous cathedral of beauty and depth of olden days and times bygone...loved it immensely

I always appreciate old cultural buildings. Although it was closed on a "Sunday" when I went there, it was quite beautiful on the outside. Imagine, a Cathedral closed on a SUNDAY?
