Granted he was in tip top shape! 3 twenty somethings and a grandpa conquered this mountain on the 30th of August, 2005. It does indeed have steep terrain, and knarly climbing at the top, but well worth the adventure. We did not use a guide and hit the trail by ourselves, but being a NOLS grad myself, I was not... more

the start is quite normal, fairly steep climb from the beginning through high forest, accompanied by wonderful birdsong ( mountainwhistler) But than ! Mud, big slippery blank face boulders to climb, blocking roots and trees, a,most impossible with rucksack to pass. I was stuck several times between theese thick branches crossing the trail. I've hiked many of Dominica's mountains, and this is one of the hardest. Like most of them, it's a stiff 2/3 hour hike straight up. Towards the end, it's some difficult clambering over roots and under or through branches and vegetation. En route, you get some awesome glimpses of views - I recall one looking down on Portsmouth.
