Address: La Habana Vieja, Havana, Cuba
Description: What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square...
What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

This is La Habana, this is old Havana the way you may have imagined it. And you won't be disappointed either. It is one of our most favourite places in Havana. It is clean but noisy/busy butbwhatban atmosphere. Granted, most of the people around you will be visitors but so what? There are plenty of locals also and the flavour... More

Charming old square tucked away in Old Havana. Very well preserved buildings around the square and lots of eateries and bars around it. Great coffee shop on 1 corner where they roast and sell the beans ad well. We brought a kilo and they taste great at home!

This is a beautiful square that has been lovingly restored. There is a great brewpub in one corner, an excellent cafe in another, Camera Obscura in the third corner, and oddly, high end European retail in the other. It's a wonderful place to stop on a hot afternoon for coffee on ice cream, or for a drink in the evening.... More

Buildings around the old square are in god condition and the central fountain is undergoing restoration. Its a very nice place to visit and have a drink in one of the old bars close to it.

Plaza Vieja is one of the nicest in Havana, in my opinion. It's fully renovated, so all the old buildings are back to their original charm. The only thing still being cleaned is the fountain the middle of the square. On one of the corners is Taberna De La Muralla Brewery, which features local beers. On the opposite corner, Cafe... More

A lovely historic square in Havana, well worth the visit. While you are there you can visit Hemmingways' bar for a famous Mohito which is excellent. Great choice of cigars but.... be cautious, it is a busy place and there are some who would love to part you with your money,

We found the square to be very beautiful and interesting. We took a walking tour in the evening and this was our starting place.
