An interesting side trip while in Bridgetown. The historical information is interesting, but there isn't that much to see at the site. The synagogue itself is great to see -- mostly because it's unusual and unexpected to find a really old synagogue in this setting. The cemetery worth a look, with dozens of burials 200+ years old. The synagogue is beautifully restored. The museum is well set up and educational. There is a mikvah that was discovered by archeologists and reopened. The water filled back to it's appropriate level naturally from underground springs. The grave yard has some of the oldest gravestones on the island. More

For Jews visiting Barbados, or anyone interested in Jewish history, this is well worth the hour it takes to visit. My rating is based on this kind of target audience. There are 3 components to the Jewish Synagogue. There's the synagogue itself, which, amazingly, is an active synagogue with regular Friday night services. But it retains the architecture and style... Built in the 1650s and one of the oldest buildings in the western hemisphere, Barbados' synagogue offers a look at the history of the Jews in Barbados, which ties intricately with the history of Barbados plantations and Barbados trade and commerce. During the restoration, a mikvah (ritual bath) was discovered; the mikvah is now open and still has a fresh... More

The history, location of the Building and the age of the cemetary. Being Jewish, I always look for signs of a Jewish community. I was in Brazil, particularly Recife. I learned that there many Jews escaping anti semitism in Recife, where I had visited a very old Synagoge in Olinda, and came to Barbados. They contributed to the agriculteral knowledge... More

Beautifully restored dating back to 1654. The mikveh (ritual bath) is fascinating, as is the cemetary with Separdic and Ashkenazic headstones I have been to Touro in Rhode Island and Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia. Now I realize the founders came from Barbados I was so impressed with the thoughtful presentation of the information. More
