Nelson's Dockyard encapsulates so much of what the priorities for the sailing nations of Europe in the 1790s-1850s were all about in both the Caribbean and Europe. I know this is the thing to see on Antigua, but we weren't too impressed. You pay $8USD to get in and it's mostly gift shops, restaurants, and a hotel. Some cool historic buildings and you get to see the nice sailboats up close, but we didn't find it to be anything too exciting. More

Stop and have lunch at the Admiral's Inn and see very BIG yachts and historic buildings from the 18th Century. Make sure to go around lunch time or later in the day after the crowds. The resorts/cruise ships taxi people in from St. John's. More

Watch out on entering. There are people at the entrance who ask for a fee. DO NOT PAY. Just ignore them and walk around the side if need be. The restorations here are very nice and it's nice to take a break form all the beaches with a stop at a historic site. We also enjoyed sitting in the tiny dockside bar and watching crews at work on the yachts. (The bar is back behind the official buildings where yachters show their passports.) More
