Not my cup of tea, but worth a look as you wander through St. Johns. Locals seem to look across even though they must have passed it hundreds of times.

We walked past this statue of this locally revered Antiguan on the way to the central market which is just past and on the left. The statue is quite different to anything we have seen elsewhere and was crowded with folk trying to get a photo shot. Certainly worth a look and while you are there pop into the market...

I'm fortunate enough to remember what this outstanding monument of V C Bird looked like before it was garishly painted.
Why on earth was this allowed to happen?
V C Bird's statue now looks more like a cartoon character, than the respected elder stateman of Antigua & Barbuda.
Maybe I'm being a bit old fashioned, but I like my statues...

I made a point of going to see after reading the reviews on this website. It did not disappoint, I thought it was wacky and different, you sure would not see this in the UK. The people are rightly very proud of this man, there were constant people by the statue, having their photo taken with VC Bird. Nice markets...

This is a statue of a beloved Antigua PM...so if you're in town, stop by!! There are few attractions in St. John's so as you're walking through town you might as well take a snapshot for the photo album. It's quite large and sits near the town market plaza. It's brightly colored, which is different since most statues are stone.
We liked that it was painted and it was pretty much right in the middle of a busy street! It kind of just sneaks up on you when you get off the bus at the terminal. I think it should have more of a place of honour!
So I know he is a national hero, but this is a very strange statue. Take your picture next to it, but not much else to do.
Take in the main Farmers Market area in St Johns its where the local people sell their products and fisherman land with their days catch . The people of Antigua love the Bird family . The Birds are still involved in the Political movement today .
He was the father of the nation and spearheaded the countries independence. nice thing to see but it is in the middle of the market area so it can get quite busy down there.
The residents seem to be very proud of this ,not sure I have a opinion on it
