Raffles was a pretty enlightened guy for his age. A couple of hundred years ago, he took the trouble to learn Malay, wrote enthusiastically about the culture and history of the Indonesian archipelago, explored the ruins of a little-known Javanese stupa called Borobodur and made detailed records of the fabulous fauna and flora of Sumatra.
