First things first. Make sure you see what time the sunrise is expected to occur from the internet. We were in Lahaina near downtown and left at 3:15 am and got to the crater around 5:30 am and sunrise was not expected to occur until 6:55 am. By that time, the summit parking lot was already filled up. But, there... More

We woke at 3AM to leave the hotel by 4AM. A two hour trip to the crater. The sunrise was the most spectacular we have ever seen. Must dress super warm, the temperature was 30 degrees, we were dressed in winter wear including blankets supplied by the hotel. The views of the crater and clouds when the sun comes up... More

It is hard to explain how pretty it is to see the sun come up over the crater while you stand there with your family!! It is well worth the early rise to see this!! Even our kids who love to sleep were happy to be there after they saw it!!

We decided to get up at 2:45am on our first day on Maui to drive up Haleakelā and do some stargazing before the sunrise and we were not disappointed! We arrived on the summit at 4am and were only the 3rd car in the parking lot. We did prepare for the cold (it was 40 degrees on December 21) and... More

This is an all day or 1/2 day event so plan ahead! 1. What is the weather? It can change in a heart beat. 2. It is 32 degrees F or 0 degrees C at the summit with 20-30 MPH winds so bring some warm clothes! 3. Plan to be there at sunrise or sunset. Sunset in my opinion was... More

To get the most out of the sightseeing opportunities at the crater you really do need to bring a jacket or sweater. Its cold way up there and you dont want to be running back to the bus or car because its too cold to enjoy the amazing vistas. If you are driving yourself up the mountain show extra attention... We did the sunrise bicycle tour with Mountain Riders. The summit was socked in by clouds, the wind was blowing about 30 mph, and it was very foggy and misty. Not much to see from the top because of the weather, but once we got down the mountain a little ways the views were spectacular. The bicycle ride down was... More

Imagine you are Luke Skywalker! Easy to access in a hire car or you can join a tour. You will normally drive through cloud formation and then it will clear. The view is spectacular, do bring warm clothing, very windy up top, you will suffer in a T shirt, even on a sunny day. We would love to have done... More

We did the Gray Line Polynesian Adventure Tour at $130 a person. The tour picks you up at 3:00 am and gets you to the peak around 5:15 after a bus transfer and wait time. It's a Ford Mini-Bus that is cramped. Gray Line does their best to provide informative guides. But their best isn't so great. What the brochures... More
