Most people drive up for the sunrise, which is spectacular! The sunset is much less crowded and awesome also! In either case...weather changes frequently. Great hikes up there too. The Sliding Sands hike is unique and gives you a great feel of other worldliness. Bring water and sunscreen.

Really informative and quite impressive. Part of Gray Line tour offered by our cruise line. Worth the trip. Also got to see steam vents.

words cannot describe the experience. Unbelieveable breathetaking. just before sunrise the ranger yells out a prayer to God for a new day..and thankful for the sun to appear. A nice hawaiian ritual to experience. make sure you dress warm since the temperature can be as low as 35 degrees. hard to believe that this is Hawaii! Worth the time and... More

This was truly one of the most amazing places we've been. We decided we didn't need to drive up to see the sunrise so we went up around 8:30 am. I'm really glad that we made the drive up and the drive down in the daylight. Wouldn't want to have missed a minute of the views. A cloud moved in... More

I would have enjoyed more if I were not the driver. Some awesome views along the way but had to keep eyes on road as there are no guard rails. It.s a National park so there is a fee. You can buy a National Park pass that you can use at all National Parks,in the islands to save a few... More

Must see with the kids. If no clouds can see the craters but hard to predict from sea level about the presence of clouds. Curvy road. My kids puked on the way down. Great views while coming down. the new observatory summit being built is another great addition. Must see the sunrise too.

We have gone to 24 National Parks and this was one of the lamest. Very dissapointed. Don't bother making the LONG drive (we drove from Lahaina to the top, and it took forever!). Don't go period unless it is a RARE clear day. Got up there and the view was mostly ruined in the clouds. So lame they don't let... More

it was a tough drive up the mountain I rain and low clouds which shrouded the lower elevations. But at the top we broke out of the clouds and were treated to a magnificent vista above the clouds. Well worth the hard drive up. Sunsets are just a spectacular as sunrises, and also just as chilly, so take a sweatshirt... More

We went there to Sunrise. We got there at 5am. It was so cold, we needed not only a fluffy jacket, but lots of blankets as well. I suggest you find your own isolated spot because people are just non-stop talking at 5 or 6am in the morning. Can we please just see a beautiful and magnificent sunrise quietly and... More
