It is worth sticking around for a couple of hours to see the bats coming out of the cave. The amphitheater seats 1000, so there was plenty of space. The ranger starts talking well before the bats are due to fly, and he did a good job keeping everyone entertained while we were waiting. No electronic devices were allowed except... More

Drive up to caverns is very scenic. The ranger gives a very detailed and interesting talk before bats come out. When bats come out it is a continous funnel of bats coming out of the cave. Awesome sight.

Because of drought there are fewer bats than normal however, it's still very impressive. Our visit was early July, 2014. A don't miss if you've never seen a bat flight in the evening.

The experience was touted as something you could write home about. The Ranger said that as long as you kept quite, didn't use electronics and stayed still the bats would fly out by the hundreds, if not the thousands. All we saw was a few scattered bats.....very disappointing, but.... I don't blame the rangers saying something that didn't happen....I blame... More

Having observed bats in my little Texas town, I was already acquainted with them, but the sheer number of them coming out of the cave is staggering! The ranger gives a good talk before the "show" and engages children and adults, too. It is hot. Bring water. Follow the rules about electronic devices...they are serious about it. There is a... More

*Loved* the caverns but after staying an extra 3 hours to see the bats we only saw ~100. I remember seeing clouds of them as a kid. Maybe it will be better in July/august but in june it is not worth the effort.

We were there in May and the height of the bat flight season is in July and August, so we did not see too many bats, maybe 1K to 2K. I've been there later in the year when 200K or more bats leave the caves in the evening. The ranger talk is informative on the bats. The seating is stone... More

Bat flight ranger talk currently starts at 7:45 pm and lasts until the bats come out. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit in the amphitheater. When we visited we were fortunate to see many bats leave-they are pretty small and fly out looking like a twister of bats, hundreds at a time-so cool. We stayed about 20... More

We got into town late and didn't have time to make a trip through the caverns and decided to hit the bat flight (saving the caverns for the next day). We enjoyed the flight and it went off without a hitch. On a slightly side note, people watching are as much fun as bat watching during this event. It amazes... More

We lucked out on this as we had not originally planned to do the Bat Flight. As it turned out the population was moderately high, ~ 50,000 and so after listening to a nice presentation by a Park Ranger on the history of the program as well as the bats we were presented with a nice view of the bats...
