The tour starts with a backwards rope climb on a steep slope, then a series of ladders. It's nothing a reasonable agile person should have trouble with, unless you have a problem with heights or the dark. Book ahead; it's a popular tour and they only take 12 people at a time. There's one tour a day, Monday-Friday only. You'll... More

Carlsbad Caverns is the type of place that makes you marvel at Mother Earth! On my 4th trip, I am still breathless at what a miraculous artist the earth is. The Caverns are right up there with the Grand Canyon for inspiration, and you can't drink in the beauty in one trip, there is just so much to wonder at.... More

If I were advising a visitor, I would say go in by the natural entrance first. The formations there are not as spectacular; we were a bit spoiled, doing the natural entrance after the Big Room. The best part was the Lower Cave tour--worth the $20 (if you are 62 or older, buy the lifetime pass for $10 and you'll... More

I took the Lower Cave Tour on Friday afternoon, August 5, 2011. A bit before 1pm, I headed down to the east side of the Visitor’s Center for my orientation for the Lower Cave Ranger-Guided Tour. This tour cost $20 and was worth every penny. The tour was limited to 12 participants. We all had to bring 4 AA batteries... More

Words or pictures cannot prepare you for the wonder of Carlsbad Caverns. You go down by elevator about 800 ft. into the earth, and from there you take easy paths around to the different fantastic formations. It will be a highlight of your life. I understand that there are new pristine caverns in the White Mountains, but I have never... More

The lower cave tour was my favorite tour at Carlsbad Caverns. I also did the self-guided Big Room tour, the King's Palace guided tour, the Left Hand Tunnel guided tour, and the Slaughter Canyon Cave guided tour. The hike was not physically strenuous, but there was a moderately difficult part at the very beginning, where we lowered ourselves down a... More

My husband and I took the Lower Cave Tour on our first day in the Caverns, and it was so great that it sort of ruined the other guided tours we took. They were very tame by comparison. Lower Cave should be taken seriously because the first thing you do is the toughest - walk backwards down a slippery rock... More
