Fun trail with some great ocean views as well as superb views of Sand Beach and The Bubbles. Expect the trail to be slippery with occasional ponding on trail, after rain. Compared to other hikes on MDI, easy/moderate. Compared to hikes on AT or above 9k' elevation: super easy.

Parked at the sand beach parking lot and crossed the beach to reach trailhead. We did the loop clockwise. I think it’s better to do clockwise to avoid climbing up rocks. You would get wide view of the ocean without any obstacles from the summit. The trail was easy, we saw many kids on the trail in the family. I... More

We are four adults in our early 60s who are very physically active, in good shape, and love to hike. This trail was right up our alley! We tried to access Great Head Trail from Sand Beach, but the tide was high and we would have had to wade across knee high flowing water and then hike with sandy, wet... More

Took Schooner Head road to the end and parked in the small lot for the Great Head trail. Beautiful hike along the shoreline of Great Head with great rocky coastline views. The trail has some moderate elevation gain, but is not hard. In some places, you have to look a bit for the blue trail marks on the rocks. Sitting... More

Once you find the beginning of the trail (a bit to the West of the North end of the Beach and across a small stream from a tidal pool) the trail is a great short hike - up some relatively challenging rock areas and then thru a thick and quiet wood to the rock overlook at the East end of... More

We trampled up with an 18 month old and 5 adults in August. The blueberries along the sunny trail were in season and the views from the peninsula were spectacular, a nice easy hike to do with a toddler and end with an afternoon at Sandy Beach. Park near the trail head and pack your swimsuit, towel and other supplies... More

Coming to Acadia twice a year every year, we finally picked our favorite afternoon hike right after we arrive after 5 hours drive from Boston. The trial is not difficult at all regardless what direction you go: clockwise or counterclockwise. The ocean views are spectacular (no wonder - you are in Acadia National Park!). The trail runs in the forest... More

We walked clockwise and really enjoyed it. Up the stairs and straight on to the left. It took us swiftly to the other car park (too far) and then we retraced a few steps and followed the blue markers. Clockwise was just fine. There was a purpose and better still the looking forward to seeing Sandy Beach as we headed... More

Several routes to take along this path, trail markers don't mark all the trail options clearly. Family could hike trail together. Nice view overlooking Sand Beach. Again problem of no nearby bathrooms, have to hike to sand beach. Or you can hop on the park loop road and park at the overly busy park beach and hike from your parking... More

I wouldn't miss this trail even though it had a few drawbacks which I'll discuss in a moment. Make sure you turn right at the top of the steps instead of going to the left - hiking the trail counterclockwise is best. First let me say that the hiking is pretty easy except for one large set of outcroppings I... More
