This is a must whenever you travel to Acadia National Park. Visited Acadia Sept 2011 and one of our excursions was the Thunderhole with a bus ride to Cadillac Mountain. Thunderhole is definitely something to experience in person. We went on a rainy cloudy day but it was still very enjoyable despite the dull weather. More

Thunder Hole wasn't overly impressive when we saw it. I've read that you can hit it when the spray is particularly impressive (high tide, storms, etc.), and we did not plan the timing of our visit very well. Look ahead to see when it makes sense to go. More

Everyone stops here on the Acadia National Park Loop Road, and the rocks and Frenchman's Bay scenery is stunning. But don't expect the "thunder" except when wind and tides are just right. And even then it's more of a "whoomp" and a lot of spray. More

Try to come when it is "thundering". I've lived in Maine my whole life and it's only happened twice when I was there. More

This is potentially disappointing because you have to catch thunder hole at a good time in order to fully appreciate it. It is almost always doing something and is usually certainly worth a visit. More

mid-tide, with the tide coming in. Check the tide charts and enjoy the booming surf and spray! More

Thunder Hole is located in Acadia National Park, on Mount Desert Island, Maine. It is one of several main attractions in the National Park, located along the Park Loop mRoad, just beyond the entrance fee station and Sand Beach. In fact, many visitors to Acadia national Park visit Sand Beach first, then hike the short trail to Thunder Hole. I... More

We went to Thunder Hole (in August 2008) after hiking the Beehive. We must have hit the right tide because the waves were perfect. The "thunder" was loud and we got soaked. It was fun watching people walk up casually not expecting to get wet and then getting drenched. If we ever go back to Acadia we will make sure... More

The only way Thunder Hole is the least bit impressive is during a hurricane.  At that point park rangers may close the area.   More

Spectacular during storms! Plan to spend some time sitting on the rocks. Perhaps bring a book to read in a quiet spot. More
