Nice views from the top of the caste, but let down by the self-guided tour

Visited as was on the way back from seeing caves, and was part of the Carte Pass Ardeche, which made the visit of the castle and the silk museum both free. The castle is nice... read more

Visited as was on the way back from seeing caves, and was part of the Carte Pass Ardeche, which made the visit of the castle and the silk museum both free. The castle is nice, with good views from the top, though the self-guided tour was very dated, and earphones were not working properly etc. As mentioned earlier, in the... More

The castle itself is nice, and the exhibition is OK as well. The self-guided tour, whereby groups of visitors push buttons to hear a taped voice playing, is weird. You are dependent on the group for the tempo of your tour, and at least in our case, everyone seemed to feel lost...

We visited on a whim after a walk and really enjoyed the visit. Probably not worth paying extra for the silk museum as the best bit - the live silkworms - are in the castle. Very interesting visit, incl. the ghost which pur kids enjoyed, though others ran out screaming.

The Chateau des Roure is a great day out. You expect a castle to have the defensive architecture and history and this one does not disappoint in that respect. However, it also offers a demonstration of the region's silk history (including a small silk-worm unit); an insight into the Huguenot History of the area; and some great views from the... More

Guide for english speakers is through an mp3 player. Castle is also an old silk farm, and the display with the silk worms is quite interesting. Good explanation of the hugenot suppression and the religious rivalries of the 17th century. The piece de resistence though is the view from the ramparts.
