Following a 30km drive down a windy unsealed road we were met at the Lake car park by Johan. He took 8 of us across the Lake in what appeared to be a basic speed boat. He handed out wooly hats and splash jackets to anyone who wanted them. (I advise you to accept). When we reached the river he... More

Our ride down and back up the Wairaurahiri River with Johan was a thrill a second. At several stops on the beautiful forested riverbanks he was very informative about flora and fauna. He then cooked us up a fantastic feast for lunch. A multi-talented man! A multi-sensory experience. Loved it.

We were a party of five who booked our trip with Wairaurhiri Jet for the sole purpose of reaching the mouth of the river for the two day walk back along the South Coast Track. However, the trip proved to be a highlight of our NZ visit. All but one in our group have used jet boats on multiple occasions... More

Jet boating on the turbulent Wairaurahiri River in the SouthWest of Southland, starting at Lake Hauroko, New Zealand's deepest lake, is both exciting and exhilarating. Although we thought we were well wrapped in our jackets and hats, Johan encouraged us to add his long waterproof coats, South American chullo hats and life jackets to our garb! The jet boat traversed... More

I booked this trip through 'Trips and Tramps' and was picked up by Steve and taken the 1 hour drive to be met by Joyce who owns and runs Wairauahiri Jet together with her husband Johan. The trip leaves from Lake Hauroko which is the deepest lake in New Zealand at 460m with Johan in his jet boat with its... More

The Wairaurahiri Jet Boating experience was taken by chance and through the efforts of "Trips &Tramps" and Johan we ended up with an unforgettable experience that had it all - thrills, environmental and geological information, white water and the occasional wet face from the spray. If you are intending to have some excitement with education and a gourmet lunch in... More

Wairaurahiri Jet departs from Lake Hauroko in Fiordland, then down the Wairaurahiri River as far as the river mouth. Surrounded by untouched native forest the steep river descent provides a thrilling ride around the rapids. There is one stop for visitors to walk ashore in the forest. Lunch is at Waitutu Lodge tramping accommodation. A superb barbeque including wild venison... More

Completely unique experience and a brilliant way to get to experience some of the best of untouched New Zealand. The hats were not only a fun novelty but very practical too for keeping hair under control as you race across the stunning lake and down the river to the sea and paua shell beach. Johan's 20 year knowledge of the... More
