Ah! what a scenic location. The moment you reach this place, you would get lost. Lying right on the cuddles of River Mahanadi, this humongous dam is just awesome. The area around it is equally beaitiful. One would be mesmerized.

I was at Sambalpur when I went to see the longest dam of Asia in our very own country. The reservoir created by this dam is just beautiful and very clear. The view from Gandhi Minar is just mesmerising. There are two vendors selling packed foods and water/soft drinks so you need not worry. You can go there to spend... More

ONe of the biggest dams in India. It provides irrigation and electricity. A very nice place to visit. There are 2 towers namely Jawahar Tower and Gandhi Tower to view the place. Jawahar tower is accessible for general public while Gandhi tower can be accessed with permission. Gandhi tower is a rotating tower.

standing on the top and knowing that it is a mud dam will cause goosebumps in u, but rest assured it has been the safest and the strongest. The whole ambience there is a delight to the eyes. The "minar" shows you a 360* view without you moving a single step as it rotates, of the whole landscape, power channels,... More

Wish we could drive over the dam. A quick visit to the viewing tower requires strong legs, beat the claustrophopia somewhat and you are good to go to the top and admire the amazing view. Rain clouds, the huge reservoir stretching across to the hills, langurs at the car park lot. A few photos a lingering a while to admire... More

Hirakud Dam, located at around 15 Kms from Sambalpur is an excellant place to visit during late monsoons and winter. The sight will live you spell bound. Zero Point, Barapahar, Jawahar & Gandhi Minar, Rose Garden are few places one must visit. However the Tourism Department has done nothing to attract the Tourists to this part of Odisha.
