Description: The Madonna del Parto is one of the greatest works of Piero del-la...
The Madonna del Parto is one of the greatest works of Piero del-la Francesca. Standing in the middle of a canopy made of pre-cious brocade, Our pregnant Lady reveals herself to the faithful. Two angels hold the tent canopy open allowing the faithful to admire the Virgin, majestic and solemn yet humble at the same time. The fresco was made around the middle of the ffteenth century in the church of Santa Maria di Momentana which no longer exists. It has been in this museum since 1992, right in the middle of a educational trail introducing visitors to the life and works of Piero della Francesca.

If you are a Piero groupie, you've come to the right place. The Madonna del Parto museum, with its one fresco, is an essential stop in the Piero trifecta that includes the Legend of the True Cross cycle in Arezzo and the Resurrection (Sansepulcro). The fresco stands by itself in respectful simplicity. There are no crowds. You sit on a... More

incredible and captivating. You can find a lot about Piero della Francesca - his life and output - from the very interesting movie. There is the room with pictures which tell the Freso story about specially with its miraculous salvage during the huge earthquake. The Fresco itself - the thing from "must see" in life. Just sit down on the... More

Piero della Francesca is one of the most fascinating artists of the history of painting; and this fresco is one of its most attractive. Compared to other works by the painter, collected in great fresco cycles (Arezzo), or present in famous museums (Milan, London, Urbino) or located in his hometown (the nearby Sansepolcro), this one has the characteristic of having... We drove from Florence to Monterchi especially to see della Francesca's fresco. The drive was arduous (with stunning views on every side), but the museum was worth the effort! First of all, there is a wonderful little film about Piero della Francesca, and then the room where the fresco is displayed is simple, subdued and lens itself to real focus... More

This is actually the Best Museum in the World. One perfect picture, perfectly displayed in a purpose built little room. Nothing to distract you from the unbearable loveliness of the Madonna del Parto. Give her your full attention for an hour or two. She deserves it. Full credit to the Italian government for setting up this perfect museum. And how... More

Pierro Della Francesca, a famous renaissance artist (1415-1492). He was born in this region so naturally the people here are very proud of him. Although he was born in Sansepolcro, his mother was from Monterchi - so perhaps this is why he painted the pregnant Madonna here in Monterchi. It was removed for restoration from its church location in 1992. ... More
