The Vredefort dome itself is awe inspiring and it would have been wonderful to have been able to enter the information centre and find out more. However it was closed and no explanation or alternative timings were given.

The Dome lies close to the town of Parys, about 70mins drive south of Johannesburg. The Dome itself refers to the entire impact area of a meteorite that struck the areas around 2 billion years ago and not a specific site as some may see it. The Vredefort crater is the largest verified impact crater on Earth, more than 300... More

We traveled all the way from Rorke's Drift to spend time in Parys specifically so that we could visit the Vredefort Dome Centre. As someone interested in geology, you can imagine how disappointed I was to find the whole venture locked up and abandoned with nature reclaiming the buildings that once offered so much potential. This is a UNESCO world... More

This area has every outdoor activity you can dream of. A weekend here will always be worth the while. Try stay in Parys for evening activities or in Thabela Thabeng resort, venterskroon for tranquility.

this heritage site has a nostalgic magic of its own, and should not be missed, would like to see more restaurants within the route and also maybe a info center with guides ..

Very few know about this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour was well managed as well as presented. Clearly a TREAT to our overall Parys adventure!

Go and decide for yourself. Travelling through the main street of Parys was disgusting. Stop streets without lines on the road, potholes all over, dirty streets and sidewalks ans according to some residents no water or electricityfor days. It is heartbreaking to see a town offering so much going down the drains. The authorities cant be proud of what we... More

The Vredefort Dome is a world heritage site. It is supposed to be the site of a large meteor impact 2000 million years ago. It is s beautiful area to visit, but it is an incredibly difficult area to out any information on. A large museum and information centre has been built just outside Vredefort. The museum stands empty and... More
