Crete’s aquarium, Cretaquarium, opened in December 2005. Belonging to a large European family of aquariums, the Cretaquarium offers its visitors the unique chance to plunge into the great marine world of the Mediterranean. From the big hunter sharks to the tiny seahorses, the sensational jellyfish, the diversity of marine life is set off against underwater Cretan seascapes such as the rock formations at Matala( South Crete)and the sea bed at Vai(North East Crete).

Wow what a place! absolutely superb selection of fish and sea creatures. It's very well set out and has lots of information. The most impressive thing are the sharks. Unless you are very lucky, you will never see them that close in the sea and if you do, I am not sure you would be hanging around too long to... More

Fantastic tanks with even sharks in. So many different types of sea life it was worth every penny. Many hours can be spent here as there is a good cafe for refreshments, should you need a break.

We read that this was one of the best aquariums around, but although we did enjoy it - it was not anything that out of the ordinary. We did enjoy the feeling of being under the water. The reptile center was closed which is a shame since I heard a lot about it We took a bus from Heraklion and... More

Dear visitor Thank you for your kind words. We would like to inform you that the "reptile-center" has nothing to do with Cretaquarium.Cretaquarium is one of the biggest PUBLIC aquariums in Europe and it is a part of HCMR (one of Europes best Marine research centers). We do not have reptiles, dolphins and other protected animals. We only shelter injured sea-turtles. The.."reptile-center" is not... More

This establishment is situated in the heart of tourist Crete, 18 km from Heraklion and 7 from Hersonisos, in a disused American base. Very exciting, educational, lots of fun, polite staff. An unforgettable experience not just for children but also for Adults. A large collection of fish of all sizes. Be there during feeding time of the fish. Could be... More

We came across the aquarium as we was having a stroll along the beach. Reasonably priced and a good day out would recommend to family's and couples. It is quite big so it takes a while to get round but it's a nice thing to do to change your holiday up rather than always be out in the sun. Also... More

Cretaquarium is the best aquarium on Crete. Normal fees to enter. Definitely worth the visit. Tou spend around two hours to see the various kinds of sea life species they have carefully put together.

From the smallest to the largest it pays to spend time finding them all here. The tanks are well maintained, and, providing you do not use flash, with modern cameras you can get amazing shots.. You will, of course have favourites, for us it had to be sharks, as this is one of the few places where you can almost... More

We have spent about 2h in the aquarium and got a decent snack at the cafeteria which is at the entrance. Based on some of the mixed reviews we didn't have that high expectations, but at the end we were thrilled - it's really nice and clean place with a very calming atmosphere. Some of the tanks are quite big... More
