There are more than 350 ancient monuments within a six-mile radius of the village of Kilmartin, Argyll: 150 of them are prehistoric. This extraordinary concentration and diversity of monuments distinguishes the Kilmartin Glen as an area of outstanding archaeological importance. It is one of Scotland’s richest prehistoric landscapes. Kilmartin House Museum is an award winning world-class centre for archaeology and landscape interpretation established to protect, investigage and interpret this internationally important archaeological landscape and the artefacts that have been found here. At this unique and vibrant centre you can also see ‘The Valley of Ghosts’ audio-visual – a time travelling experience with breath taking imagery and haunting music. There is an on site shop and an award winning cafe. To find out more, explore our web site, wander through our interactive map and see what's on our Events Programme.

This museum is located in lovely Kilmartin Glen. Nearby are wonderful ancient stone artifacts for long lost peoples. The staff is excellent. There is a beautiful garden at the museum. We did not eat there, but it looked like they had a nice small restaurant.

A lovely little museum with a great cafe. Staff were friendly, helpful and very knowledgable about the area with an obvious love for the history embodied in the landscape here. Daily kids activities are a bonus for those with young children, ours loved the storytelling though I was a little disappointed the stories were standard children's books rather than based... More

Thankyou for your review. Glad you enjoyed your visit. There are organised activities every Thursday afternoon during the summer. That is an interesting point about making the stories more specifically relevant to Kilmartin Glen. There are hands on activities for children in the Museum - grinding grains with a quern stone is a favourite. More

Puts so much of the glen in context. Always worth a quick visit – the ticket price helps keep it open. Some of the stuff in the shop is great too – recommend the Kilmartin Sessions CD of stone-age instruments played by modern musicians. The museum adds serious depth of understanding I recommend visiting the museum AFTER walking round the... More

Thankyou for your review. Some visitors like to visit the museum and then the Glen, armed with information about the monuments, others like to do it the other way round! We are just happy that you enjoyed your visit and are so enthusiastic about the museum and surroundings. Many of the items in the shop are created by local artists... More

We found the displays to be very interesting and the staff friendly and helpful. Visiting the museum before walking to the prehistoric sites made our visit more meaningful. Although not large, the centre was well worth a visit and had a very good cafe as well as a book/craft shop & washrooms. Free parking. Would definitely return to explore further... More

Thankyou for your review. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to the museum. It is a gateway to the glen and I'm glad you felt it enhanced your appreciation of the archaeology of Kilmartin Glen. This is an amazing area with a wealth of standing stones, burial cairns and rock art and yet it is little known outside the area.... More

While this is a small museum, it is chocked full of items and information from the immediate area. The information is set up to be viewed in a technical light....maybe a little more advanced than most are prepared to absorb....this would be my only criticism. There is an attempt to have "hands on" items for the younger (and older!) kids;... More

Thanks for your review. It is a shame you didn't have more time in the museum. Some visitors think it is too technical and adult while others consider it to be more aimed at children - it is interesting to see the different perspectives on what we offer. Glad it gave you an insight into the history and landscape of... More

While not a large collection of items, the museum helps to understand the significance of the Kilmartin Glen and to see some of the items that have been found in the area.

Thankyou for your review. We are planning a development of the museum so that we have room to display more of the artefacts which are currently in storage and offer greatly improved facilities to our visitors. Hope to see you again. More

We took the guided tour of the glen before visiting the museum. Highly recommended. Lots of information to amplify what you learned on the walk.

Looks like a very big building but was quite small inside- only on lower level and cost £18 for 4 of us. Staff friendly and coffee shop and surroundings lovely but felt the actual museum wasn't value for money. (sorry) we thought that there would be more to it. We are spoiled coming from Glasgow as most of the museums... More

I'm sorry you were disappointed with your visit. You are right, as a small museum in a remote rural area run by a charitable trust with very little public funding, we are never going to be able to compete with Kelvingrove Museum which has public support and a vast number of visitors. Visitors who Gift Aid their entrance fee are... More

We visited last week and very much enjoyed the museum. The staff were extremely helpful in telling us how to get to the cairns in the area (walk through a sheep pasture!) and marking sites on a map. The little giftshop and cafe are very nice too.

We passed through Kilmartin Glen about eighteen years ago, visiting the linear late Neolithic Bronze features and when we learned about Kilmartin House, my wife and I decided if we every went back to Britain, this was a 'must see', reenforced by Neil Oliver's History of Ancient Britain and the jet necklace found in Glebe Cairn. So when our family... More

Glad you enjoyed your trip to Kilmartin 18 years after your first visit and pleased that we lived up to expectations - give or take a jet necklace. If our development plans are successful, we hope to be able to house more genuine artefacts in the place they were discovered. Hope you will be able to return sooner than another... More
