I spent a couple days in Rio Lagartos birding with Diego both by land and by boat. I highly recommend any trips lead by Diego or his son by a birder/photographer of any skill level including advanced. Nothing replaces the type of local knowledge Diego has and was able to help me succeed in finding as many different species as... More

A great way to see the birds, crocodiles, mangrove swamps, salt ponds while in a small boat. Tour guide took the time to be sure we saw a tiger heron nearly hidden in the trees.

Four mature adults drove from Cancun to Rio Lagartos and straight to a waterfront restaurant, Ria Maya, owned by Diego. We enjoyed a delightfully tasty dinner that was reasonably priced and a front row seat for the daily sunset. The sunset was beautiful and it seemed as though the entire world stood still to witness this event! Diego also owns... More

So glad I researched before coming up to Rio Lagartos for a flamingo tour and booking with Diego and his company! Had never been to Rio Lagartos and didn't know what to expect, so decided to set up tour beforehand and glad I did, just for ease and peace of mind when we got here. Diego responds right away with... My husband and I set out at 7 am with guide William and boat driver Pako. They knew where to go in the estuary to see the birds and were excellent in identifying them, especially since we are very amateur birders. We saw 45 species as well as a crocodile. I loved seeing the flamingos, the mangrove warbler, Yucatan woodpecker... More

My wife and I were on vacation staying on Holbox Island, and I deserted her to go on an overnight birding trip to Rio Lagartos, only about 40 miles away, but close to a 3 hour drive because there is no direct road. I booked tours with Diego Nunez, after reading good thinkgs about him online. I chose to stay... More

Rio Lagartos is an unspoiled Mexican fishing village close to several outstanding Mayan attractions with excellent fishing, food, and world class birding. Diego's accommodations are both comfortable and affordable. Fishing with him and top guide Pako was a treat even beyond the considerable "baby" tarpon action. Pako was also extremely well versed in the local, and incredibly prolific and diverse,... More

Great people in every sens of the Word - Who knew very corner and spot in the area. Great knowledge of the birds and animals around.- I'm a biologist but still impresed and learned and saw a lot of new things. Best guided tours I ever had !! Diego's resturant was our every-day stronghold when not birding - god food,... More

4 of us (me, my wife and 2 friends) recently returned from a 2-week birding trip to the Yucatan. Our overall experience was great and a true highlight was a full day that we spent entirely with Diego Nunez birding in the Rio Lagartos area. We spent the morning in Diego's all-terrain truck exploring ranches and scrublands near town and... More

Our two days with Rio Lagartos Adventures were terrific! Arrived late moning and were warmly welcomed by Diego and his terrific team of naturalists, including his sons, born and raised on the estuary, who know every curve in the mangroves and each grove in the bio preserve. Our first tour was on the water, and began after three, when the... More
