I first visited Rio Largartos about 5 or 6 years ago as I was searching around for some fly fishing waters, and here ran into Diego. Since then have visited R L about two times a year ever since and every time fished either with Diego or one of his guides; mainly for the small tarpon in the inlets and... More

As I am 5-month pregnant, my husband and I decided for a relaxed holiday in Mexico rather than our usual backpacking adventures. What Diego offered us in Rio Lagartos was the perfect experience we could wish for: amazing sunset on the ocean, surrounded by birds (and even dolphins!), crocodile-watching in the mangroves at night and the most wonderful bird-watching in... BATTLING Multiple Sclerosis more than doubled my battle with the Tarpon [see photo in Diego's website] .Notice Diego is NOT in the boat. The tarpon wrapped itself on a stick in the mud,and Diego was quick to wade out to remove the entaglement while I battled this baby.Fly rod 8 wt.,bushy streamer,bone-fish leader[reversed]...I return to Diego's excellent guiding next month. We booked Diego for 9 separate land- and boat-based tours (all private) over a 1-week period, focusing on wildlife photography. He proved to be the ideal guide; with his 20 years of experience, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the local species, and a superhuman ability to find and identify them. Without his expert assistance, we would not have encountered... More

Diego is a very professional guide, answered our emails promptly and met us on the dock at 7am right at the agreed upon time. Throughout our tour of the estuary he answered our questions and pointed out some amazing birds that we would not have spotted on our own. When we visited in early March we saw green parrots, white pelicans,... More

We went to Rio Lagartos to do a wildlife trip rather than the Flamingos as we had seen plenty at Celestun. Diego is not only a blinkin' top birder but a pleasent, easy going sort of a chap too! We took a 6.30am 3 hour boat trip with him which was wonderful. I'm sure he pays the croc, the boat... More

We'd read that there were not many flamingoes in Celestun so we decided to head to Rio Lagartos. It was a very long drive from Merida (3 hours) but it was very worth it. The road signs were easy to follow but the moment we got into the Rio Lagartos town, the "harrassment" started. We were tailed by tour touts... More

I lined up this trip as a relaxing finish to a two-day adventure of hiking around Mayan pyramids and cenotes with my sons, 4 and 6. Diego Nunez, the proprietor, speaks good English and setting the trip up in advance by e-mail was a breeze. We stayed at Hotel Villa de Pescadores, a basic little hotel on the water, and... More

I went with Rio Lagartos Adventures for a tour of the lagoon. The main attraction here is the flock of flamingos which I enjoyed very much. Most people go just for the nice boat ride and to see the flamingos. There are many tour operators here and most are ok for the average tourist but if you are a birder... More

Its really so lovely to see the flamingos of Rio Lagartos. its a long tour, kind of expensive but its so nice to see those hundreds of animals stepping in the water and flying over the laguna. Make sure that your guide takes you further to the salina where they make salt. Did you know, that they put chemicals in... More
