Please friends do visit the lighthouse. Its worth climbing all those stairs..once you reach the top you'll feel like flying...
During your visit to Mahabalipuram, your guide will tell you to visit lighthouse also. There are two one old one, in the shape of elephant and another one is normal one. when you are there spend 30min there also.
Although it didn't have very beautiful view on too of lighthouse, it is still a place worth going where you can hike around the surrounding to see some stones temples like the five Rathas which is nearby & worth going to...

Not amazing but a good view all the same and you're here so why not go and take a look. The fee is small, about a 100R's including camera for 2 people. It can be added to a tour of some of the other sights and makes a nice change from the more 'cutural' sights of the town.
If you have extra time and you are done with other important spots from Mahabalipuram then you can give try for this lighthouse. Lighthouse is more than 100 years old having solid construction. If you have limited time in the town you could drop this from your itinary and concentrate on the other temples including the beach one.
The park around the lighthouse with ancient carvings was fantastic. We spent several hours wondering around. Great place to relax and take in the wonderful surrounds at Mamallapuram. Well worth a few days in this lovely seaside town.
the old light hose at mahaballpuram is vsiable from almost any corner of town right from panch ratha to shore temple on can have good surrounding view of town and the sea shore aa well
The lighthouse, situated the central monuments area along with Mahishasurmardini cave and balancing rock. I like the city view from the lighthouse. I had visited to this tower in 2008 as well.
