This is one of the decent active light house in India. The view from the top is excellent. The staircase is quite narrow and becomes packed when there is lot of crowd.
It was easy to find. Paid Rs.10 for entry. The place is too small and staircase too narrow. You have to brush against oncoming traffic which was not very pleasant. The second flight of stairs was just 15 steps but is too narrow and difficult for old people to navigate. Place was too crowded as it was a weekend. Maybe... More
I think this is India's one of the best active lighthouse . May be difficult for some people to visit as you have a climb a long distance through uneven stairs. But it is more than worth climbing all the stairs.
putting tickets for this didn't seem worth, as it wasn't managed properly. the stairs were very narrow and people had to wait standing there. view from top is fine, you can get the same from a temple right next to it for free and without suffering the suffocation.
Great view for photographing and viewing the sunrise and the sunset . lots of sculpture and rock carving to be seen around mamallapuram .

The view from the light house is breathtaking...the breeze can blow anyone off !!! so be careful...there are steps to go up and there are some carvings on the way...its a steep climb and then some steps to climb. So maybe difficult for people with weak knees...but otherwise awesomeeeee...
For a quick view of the small town and its beautiful monuments and beach. The old lighthouse is open to a limited number of people at a given time.
The views of the area are nice enough, but not really outstanding, almost the same views being available from one of the nearby temples. There's a small charge for going up the lighthouse, but more annoyingly, there were so many people wanting to get in on my visit, long waits on the lighthouse's staircase were a necessity.
The old and new light houses are next to each other. The old one is a platform where live fire is made with wood and seen from a long distance from sea. Then the new one modern with electrical. Good to see
