I rode the Pakihi Track using the excellent shuttle service provided by John and Ngaio at Motu Trails- a beautiful 90 minute drive along a river gorge takes you to the start point of a delightful 8 ilm easy dirt road ride to the start of the trail. The trail is "easy" from a fitness perspective as it's almost all... More

Took the male members of our family up to do the pakiiki MTB track as we did not want to pay the shuttle prices .As a passenger on the way up I was starting to feel a bit nervous about driving down, but at least I could take in the bush and views. We dropped the boys off at the... More

The logistics of the 75km mountain bike ride might be daunting, but can all be overcome by Maxine and Bob who run the Toatoa Farm Stay. There is an option for bicycle rental as well. Maxine drove me to Matawai, the start of the track with the first 11km tar seal and slightly downhill to provide a sense of accomplishment.... More

My wife and I have just done the Motu loop incorporating the Dunes trail, Motu Road and Pakihi track. It was a fantastic experience and with a highlight being our stay with Bob and Maxine at their farm B&B in Toatoa. Highly recommended for the authentic NZ regional experience. A must do for anyone with reasonable cycling skills and an... More

Cycling through Opotiki and it's heritage buildings was great. The 9.5km dunes section of the Motu trail was outstanding with the conditions as they were. Bluebird day. Limpid sea. Undulating trail. Climbing up to Toatoa was tough but rewarding. From there on, just amazing cycling, especially the flowy downhill Pakihi Stream section.

Not a doddle but good fun otherwise. Superb views though. Transport available locally for a one way trip. I.E. To the top of the hill. P.S. I live in Opotiki.

Great bike ride with amazing views. We are not the most experienced mountain bikers ever and decided to bike the full 78 km in two days. We left our car in Opotiki (secure car parking) from where our host Maxine drove us to Matawai. Although there is less climbing involved compared to starting at Opotiki don't expect it to be... More

This road is one to remember. A bit of an adventure from go to whou. At times it pays for the passenger to have a lot of faith.
