Visited here on 5 November 2014. As a keen Birdwatcher I was looking forward to visiting this, relatively new and still evolving wetland reserve. I was not disappointed. Large car park with clean toilet facilities and a good 'Interpretive Board' for the reserve. Before getting out of the car I'd seen a pair of Pheasant Coucal and also heard a... More

Almost silent, can just hear highway murmurings; so worth a visit to escape our noise filled world. No shaded parking and little shade in most of the park. Trees are immature and scrubby. Saw only magpie geese water fowl and butcherbird No dogs allowed so no nasty surprises underfoot or on wheels. Bring your bike for helmet free riding. Breakfast... More

Cattana Wetlands covers about 30 hectares of land, very well laid out and well cared for. We went about 9.30am on a Tuesday morning and there were only a few other people there. The weather was perfect for a nice stroll around taking in the sights of the birds, the varied vegetation and the lovely lakes. Plenty of seats if... More

Thank goodness for the vision of a previous council, this degraded sugarcane land was purchased, rehabilitated and resourced to become the wonderful little "hidden" wetland that it is today! We live in Yorkey's Knob and Cattanna Wetland is high on our list of attractions whenever we want to impress visitors with our numerous assets or whenever we simply wish to... More

Whether you're into spotting birds or simply want to enjoy a peaceful walk away from traffic and surrounded by greenery You'll get it here. We went towards the end of the day twice and both times clocked up a few new bird species, which made our day. based on reading others accounts suspect you'd do even better early in the... More

We went for a walk around the boardwalk. It was very nice but it was swarming with mozzies (to be expected in a wetlands) so we couldn't really stop in one spot for too long. We didn't spot any wildlife or hardly any birdlife either. Maybe it just wasn't the right time of the day. It had nice bbq areas... More

Cattana Wetlands is a area in Smithfield, Cairns literally opposite the Smithfield dump. It was originally a 80 hectare site used for sugar cane farming and gravel mining which was purchased by the Cairns regional council and converted into 30 hectares of forest with large freshwater and saltwater lakes. Governments placed 3 million dollars into the redevelopment of the site... More

We have friends at Kewarra beach so they recommended for us to visit the wetlands which was just around the corner. It is open from the early morning and there is a nice boardwalk through a palm forest. Apparently, it used to be a sand quarry in the past and a great place for bird watchers as there are bird... We visited this wetlands in the late afternoon (purposely to spot birds). We were the only people there and it was so peaceful. The place has a big swampy area as well as boardwalk into the forest. We saw many birds including ibis, darter, masked lapwing, egret, comb crested jacana, frairbird, figbird, lorikeets, grebes and a few others. We spent... More

This nature reserve is an easy ride north of Cairns, signposted from the Captain Cook Highway near Yorkey's Knob. It has good paths, a rainforest boardwalk, BBQ and picnic areas. The paths are suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, there is a good parking area and toilets. Today, not at the best time, I saw yellow-footed scrub fowl, jacanas, various ducks,... More
